What makes you think they are gone? Last time I checked they were just having problems with their site.

They better not be gone!

did you even read the first page of the site? the FBI has taken over

Bwahaha.
Yes, of course, they have nothing else to do...

They've been hacked (and this isn't the first time).

It's so secretive, one of the weekly news magazines (Time or Newsweek) did a cover story on Usenet (specifically alt.bin.*) like 10 years ago. Most of the people who use Usenet now are, well, noobs.

Then why do most of the people who use it now call torrenters noobs? Just because it's relatively new compared to Usenet?

something doesn't add up. If it was real I highly doubt the FBI would kindly put the elitetorrents logo. also, read the message

THIS SITE
HAS BEEN PERMANENTLY SHUT DOWN BY
THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION AND
U.S. IMMIGRATION AND CUSTOMS ENFORCEMENT

Immigration? What's with the Homeland Security logo?

Dunno about that, I have only been using bit torrent for a couple years so I am still pretty new at it I guess. Never even heard os usenet but if it has been around for many years thats probably why. I tend to be a "next gen" nerd, not so concerned about "old" tech.

Amusingly enough, the page source shows that it was created in MS Word

If (and this is highly unlikely) it's actually real, then some moron at the FBI needs to outsource to someone who actually knows how to make websites ;)

WHOA! Slyck has contacted the FBI to ask whether they have shutdown the website. I think that would've been a bad move, because if it wasn't then they'll shut it down anyways. What irony!

Yet another piece of proof that Slyck has dull minded columnists...

Back before web forums were around (and before they stopped sucking), Usenet was the main Internet message board system (except they were called newsgroups, not forums). As a message board system it kind of sucked, because once you posted a message it would take hours or even a day to get to all of the other servers on the Internet (on the plus side, that helped limit how much time you could spend on it, so the addiction wasn't as bad as with Anandtech :)). But you can attach binary files to messages, so it quickly became popular for pornography and pirated software.
