Hi all,

My friend got a summer internship at UC Berkeley. She leaves on 6/2 from NYC.

However, she has a problem with her baggage. She really doesn't want to carry a lot of things, but how do you bring along sheets and pillows and blankets and thigns like that? Those take up a LOT of space. Is there any way to stuff these things in a minimal amount of space?

yeah, she can buy that stuff over there, but when she has to come back home, then what? Just throw it away?

AND, what's the best way to get from the Oakland Airport to the dorms in UC Berkeley? Not just to the edge of campus, i mean how do you get right to the DOORS of the dorms?

Help us out here, people!

I agree with ^. Ship beforehand and pick it up when she gets there. Or, better yet, just buy the necesities when she gets there. Or, drive. She can pack everything in the trunk.

Driving might be abit of a stretch. Whys the internship at Berkeley? Is it at the labs? Just curious...

I think the best thing to do is buy the items here or ship them. If she doesn't have a car here or know the way around buying things might be difficult.

The absolute best way would be taxi I suppose. Then Bay Porter Express. Then Air BART. If she's new around here BART and bus is probably out of the question, but you could BART to the Downtown Berkeley stop, then hop on a taxi or catch the 51 which is right on the same block and ride it down to the dorms. Oh, which dorm? 51 goes to Units 1,2, and 3.

to get to campus dorms, take a taxi from okland its not that far so it wont cost too much. Which dorms is she living in? clark kerr? unit3,2,1 foothill? Im not sure but i think clark kerr and foothill are closed during the summer, so probably unit3,2,1. If so, take the cab into around center street and hike up from there to telegraph (if she doesnt have too much baggage) because this way you will save money since you get stuck in traffic around telegraph.

I'd say purchase linens and other essentials when you get there. While it may seem a bit wasteful of money, you can always donate them to a good charity when it's time to leave. The only exception would be if you're picky about your comforter (I personally am not).

I would not recommend BART to get from the airport to campus, esp. if you have baggage. That would be pretty brutal (I know from experience). Pay the $15 - $18 to take a door-to-door shuttle, which is a shared service that transports a group of people to their destinations by minivan. Cab fare would be roughly double that if you're very pressed for time and need to ride alone.
