So I have this buddy that is twenty, his problem is he has some nagging acne. For some reason he hasn't grown out of it yet and it obviously is bothering him and embarassing. He has gone to the dermatologist but evidentally nothing has really done the trick, although sometimes he isn't very persistant. I was just wondering if through any of your experiences if you guys know of something that would help or do the trick? Is there something that he should do to help prevent it? I heard drinking a lot of water could help by flushing some of the bacteria that causes it. Is there a certain way he should eat? He eats generally healthy and doesn't drink pop really at all. Is there any sort of solution that you guys have used or daily wash that has shown vast improvements? He's not like a "Pizza Face" but it does show and it bothers him greatly. Is only really on his forehead. Does anyone have suggestions? Thought I may be able to help him...

Thanks for reading...
Stu

Accutane.

Kills your liver and has more side effects than having a picnic on three mile island, but it works.

tell your friend to look into Proactiv. When I was a teenager it really cleared up my acne. Right now I use Clean and Clear's oil free deep action cream clenser, it works really well and leaves my face all tingly.

anyways, i took accutane in high school and it sucked and it didn't work very well. my acne only started to just go away on it's own in the past year, and I am 20 years old. No fancy cleaning regiment here, wash twice a day, use the salicylic acid pads once in a while and benzyol peroxide cream once in a while. I mostly get it on my neck and chin region, i think when i started shaving more frequently that helped. doesn't help much for a forehead though.

Wrong. For oily acne prone skin, you want to use a less mild soap, like regular antibacterial Dial.

If your skin gets dry after soaping, moisturize with something like vitamin A cream.

He turned 20 in June and he thought that it would fade out with age, however it really hasn't changed at all. Hasn't gotten worse or better..stayed the same. I know he washes because its kind of a self-esteem killer for him so he wants badly to get rid of it. He's not like unattractive (no, I"m not gay) but it does hurt his appearance a bit. Why hasn't he grown out of it yet?

he needs antibiotics...
ask the doc for some erythromycin or tetracycline.
2 to 4 tabs(250mg each) a day for a month and i bet you all the acne will be gone.
But the thing is he has to stay on the plan...he can do cycles...start with 3-4 a day and after a month,
one a day.

1st side effect: a little poorer
2nd side effect: smooth skin

Vibramycin is also good for getting rid of acne.

Boy I wish I took that bet, I'd be a rich man. Back in my high school days I took all those medications. Nothing worked for me except good old fashioned growing out of it. And yes some people never do, it's not uncommon to see grown ups that have noticable acne.

I'm 26 now and rarely get acne, but if I wear a hat a lot I will get it on my forehead. Or if I am sweating a lot and rubbing my forehead. Does he wear hats a lot? Could be part of the problem.

I would try Retin-A micro gel first to see if that solves the problem... if not I'd move on to antibiotics + Retin-A ... if that STILL doesn't work then try Accutane as a last resort. It's a powerful drug and WILL have side effects no matter what anyone says.

As for washing his face, I'd recommend dove soap brand. Its the best I've used so far for cleaning my face.

I wash my face twice a day and use rubbing alcohol on it at least once a day if not twice. One thing that causes acne a lot is touching your face. It smears the oil and introduces a lot more bacteria than one would like. I usually get zits on my cheek if I talk too much on the phone or prop my head up during class. ;) Resting your head is a hard habit to break, but I'd say it's worth it in the long run. Anyway, just something for him to think about.

Good stuff. Follow the above advice...it works.

I, on the other hand, being cheap....am currently self-medicating on outdated antibiotics. I've taken amoxicillin from the mid 90s. Still seems to work. I've got a built up supply, so gotta finish that off first. This is highly dangerous...so don't do what I do.

I don't think that is a problem, nobody in his immediate family has acne at all. I have seen some of his other relatives that are farther along in the tree, and they seem to all have good skin.

Is there like a good soap that I could maybe recommend? I was once told that Dial is the best for anti-bacterial. Is there a lot of propoganda with all the other face washes like clean and clear or oxy clean?

Opposite for me. I took it in HS and it helped a lot.

I had acne up until I was 23. All the creams, antibiotics I tried didnt work. Accutane worked great, cured my acne. I dont regret taking it. About 2 years later, acne hasnt returned. The side effects werent too bad, just some dried out skin, nosebleeds sometimes. You have to drink a lot of water, if you do, the side effects shouldnt be too bad.

DRINK ENOUGH WATER
CLEAN BED SHEETS/PILLOW CASE
KEEP YOUR FACE CLEAN AT ALL TIME
YOU DON'T NEED ANYTHING FANCY TO PUT ON YOUR FACE
EAT LESS SALTY FOOD
EAT MORE FRUITS

THAT HELPS A LOT
