I bought a brand new 2002 Hyundai Accent last year for 8,995.00. It really is a pretty good car.. not exactly my idea of a dream car, but I am really happy with it.. and they have an excellent warrenty and they do your first two years of oil/filter changes free... worth looking into anyway. That price is for the base, manual transmission, AM/FM cassette.. but it does come with A/C.
for those of you that say tempos aren't reliable, my friend has a '90 tempo with a 3 speed auto(tops out at 150km/h) and he drives the living piss out of that car and it begs for more. It's easy as hell to fix, parts are a dime a dozen. Also, don't rule out Oldsmobile Eighty-Eights or Ninty-Eights, as they are dirt cheap, have a 3.8L V6(bulletproof motor) get 28mpg on the highway, and are very comfortable. they are generic cars, but an amazing value for what you get, especially on insurance and such. plus it's the last car anyone will steal

Insurance is cheap, and gas milage is okay. The best thing about it is the warrenty and the fact that all my oil/fiter changes for the first 2 years are free. Worth looking into anyway. I didn't want a Hyundai at all.. but my parents talked me into it for the warrenty. I have been pretty happy with it so far.
I would have paid the extra $4,000 for my car. $12,973.96 to be exact.

Another vote for the Eighty Eight. Comfortable, roomy and powerful with great mpg.
Got my loaded 1997 Eighty Eight Regency for $6000 and love it.
What about a Hyundai? Especially used, they are exceptional value for money.
The main problem is early depreciation, which pushes running costs well ahead of more expensive cars such as VW. If you buy used, then you get a lot of car for your money. My brother has a coupe (I think called tiburon in the US) - he took a friend who had just bought a Ford Fiesta (similar to a festiva) for a spin. His friend couldn't understand how he could afford such a 'sports car'. My bro never told him that it cost considerably less than his fiesta.
Build quality is good (though not excellent), however, reliability is certainly very good: they offer the longest warranty in the industry! Comfort and driveability are more than adequate. Insurance is rock bottom, and fuel economy is great.

i had a 1987 tempo while i was in high school (3-4 years ago) and its top listed speed (on the speedometer) was 85MPH. i must have drove it too hard or something because it started breaking down major my senior year. dying at streetlights and stuff. it was alright for a car that was 14+ years at the time. i woudln't recommend getting one though. and i'm staying away from american cars. my friends had japanese cars that were almost as old and they outperformed my car by tons.
