Friend has $10k to spend on a used car. What should he get?

Friend of mine is looking to get a new car.
He needs to seat 4 kids and 2 adults (passenger and driver) so he was looking at SUV's but you can't get anything decent for 10k.

He's looking at station wagons like the Saturn LW series, minivans, or my suggestion was maybe a full size car with a bench seat.

What do the car experts of Anandtech suggest?
Thanks.

Tell him to save up 4k more and buy this 🙂 It's got TONNES OF ROOM. I'm 6'3, and I can put the front seat all the way back, and still have ample room for myself if I wanted to sit in the back seat 😀 If the kits are small, all 4 will fit in the back seat 😛

Yea, that's what i thought too - until I saw it in person. I bought it yesterday (well, not that one in the picture - mine will be here on March 1st) 😛

I'm glad you like it, they are great vehicles for the price. But, I've seen it in person, and I still think they are ugly as hell. 😀 Different strokes I guess.

Subaru... Legacy... wagon... AWD.

You can get a very nicely-loaded Ford Exploder in my area for $10k. My family has 2... one Mercury V8, one Eddie Bauer V6. Also in the same class but a tad more pricey is a used Nissan Pathfinder. The Nissan fanbois will back me on that one. One of my friends sold his Exploder to get an 00 Pathfinder. Only drawback on the nice VQ V6 is that it only drinks premium.

BTW, a Scion isn't a used car... neither is the Element.

EDIT: I forgot to say... MAXEEEMAAA

they are in that much demand that you have to wait till march? wow, never would have guessed. good that you like it. i think the new TC is pretty cool though.

If he needs that much room for the family, a minivan is the way to go. A 2000-2001 Dodge Caravan should be doable for $10,000-11,000.

Dodge Caravan, Toyota Sienna, and Honda Odyssey all sound ideal.

A car won't fit his family, and full size vans are a waste if you don't need all the cargo room.

4 kids and 2 adults?!?

Definitely sounds like a minivan is in his future. He'd have to get a 3 row SUV, and those are usually pretty pricey, plus they aren't exactly great on gas if that's a concern.

you can get a nice '97 prelude or '01 impreza(sp?) 2.5rs for that much

stick 2 of the kids in the backseat and 2 in the trunk
