Friend had me test drive a WRX...worst mistake of my LIFE

beer

Lifer
Why? WHY OH WHY DID I CAVE INTO THE PEER PRESSURE?

I test drove a WRX 5-spd yesterday, and after I got used to the clutch (hadn't driven a stick in a few months), it was amazing. I could feel the turbos just lurch me forward, with zero body roll...it made his 2.5 RS feel like a wet noodle and my ford contour like...well words can't describe it.

Test driving it was the biggest mistake ever so far this year. Now, I NEED to own it. I have to have it....must work more hours....need more money...maybe I should sell myself on a corner now...

I went through the same phase earlier this year. Whatever you do, DON'T WATCH THAT RALLY VIDEO that was around a month or so ago.

If you do that, it's all over. 😀

Guess i got lucky... I have a 1.8 Turbo Passat and my dad has a WRX that he lets me drive when i come home... Life is good 🙂

Yeah, I know what you mean. The same thing happened to me back in the mid 60's when I walked into a Ford dealer and saw a 427 Cobra sitting on the showroom floor. I didn't have the $4500 to buy it. I'm waiting for the price to come down now!

THAT is the reason why I refuse to test drive a WRX. Last year I made the mistake of calling a local dealer and giving them my number because I wanted to look at one in person when they first were released. The dealership hounded me for months trying to get me to test drive one. Every time they would get one on the lot they'd give me a call. And I know if I drove one I'd probably try to sell a kidney or something to buy one. :Q

And it will only get worse... STi model, EVO 7, RX-8s, oh my...
Stay away from those auto shows... and stop watching Speedvision!
😀

argh i wish i was old enough to trick the dealers into thinking i have enough money to buy one....all i want is a test drive and they all turn me away when they see a 17year old pull up in a 1991 civic dx.🙁

For my 21st birthday my parents wanted to give me a track day in some super cars, ferraris etc. and I told them not to get it for me for the reason that I would then spend the rest of my life living in a sh!thole, not buying anything and just saving for a ferrari.

I plan not to test drive any cars that I can't afford to own as I will then just want them and nothing else.

Are they really that good. Please tell me more about them. I have a non-turbo 3000GT, and Im thinking about getting something a little faster....and the WRX was on my list of cars to check out🙂

i haD a subaru impreza 5 speed, New in '93 wow that car would Handle, and as long as i kept it
above 2500 rpm had good power too,!!!🙂 My ex-wife kept the car as part of the divorce..🙁

I was driving my friend's E36 M3 on PCH over break, and up comes a little yellow WRX to play with me... he guns it, I try to get back into 2nd, but can't... he pulls a few carlengths on me, then I catch up, then he stops pulling at a certain point... then we both back down near the top of 4th gear... so yea, they're pretty quick 🙂

Cool.. I gotta give that a try. I'll visit a Subaru dealer when I got some time.

I already thought of that plan... no one will buy me 🙁

They're slugs on the highway and they don't have much topend. Thats what AWD does to a car tho...

Dont get me wrong, the WRX is a great bang for the buck car. I'd love to have one. I just don't want to get the Suburu Gay Complex that so many Scooby owners get when they think their car is the best on the road.

I drove a WRX when looking for a new car. It felt like a little toy. I bought a 2000 Camaro SS. I prefer the muscle car approach to cars... big engine, big wheels and lots of torque.

Don't forget the body roll and lack of handling with that big torquemonster!

Gee, thanks a lot for posting this, Elemental! Now I'll have to go test drive one, just to see what all the fuss is about 😉

Only question is, how does this compare to the Jaguar X-Type? It also has all-wheel drive, but it has a V6 and leather, and costs about $8,000 more.

And don't forget, how it will handle in the snow, the amount of gas that thing sucks up, and the UGLY design.. well the WRX isn't that good looking, but ALOT better than the camaro, yeah and good luck sneaking pass cops when u're on the highway.🙂

Funny you should bring this up. I went to the suburu dealer today very interested in a top of the line WRX, prepared to sign if I liked the car.

Performed great. But damn that car is ugly. I mean butt ugly. really, really, really ugly.

no sale.

Yeah.. I love the WRX, but the best anyone ever called it is homely.. the worst well, that can't be printed here. 🙂 I wouldn't mind a facelift and some plastic surgery for it for the next model year.

Initial reports on the X-type are not favorable - go see the road test at Edmund's, for example. And a fully-loaded X-type is not a cheap car - they can get over $40K fairly easily.
