One of my friends just called me up and told me he is engaged.

I told him i don't believe him because he can't afford it.

He said its true that he can't afford it, but he at least got the ring. i told him to prove it and to send me a picture.

I think he is playing a joke on me.

Edit: If its really true, man that sucks for me. That would mean that i would be out of available friends to hang out with. His cousin which a friend of mine also got married about two years ago and have a kid already, i barely see him anymore.

I had a friend at work, total joker, he came to work one day (we're all advanced college kids, 21-25 years old) and told everyone he was engaged. SInce he never talked about a girlfriend we just laughed it off. Then a couple of weks later he came to work as usual and announced that him and his fiance had decided to not wait for the few months they were going to be engaged, and just get married that weekend. We all had a good laugh, and ignored him. Finally we went to see this guys Dad (who was a supervisor where we worked) and he confirmed all of this to us. Something about her parents being pissed that they were getting married, and her Grandparents offering to pay for everything (including honeymoon to HAwaii) for them to just get married immediately, and kinda give her parents the finger. That weekend he was married...still married now two years later (and now they're pregnant...we all thought maybe that's why they got married, but she wasn't pregnant then).

simply ask the girl to get on the phone.

That would prove nothing, she has played a joke on me before.
what would really be the point ? What do you have vested in this relationship ? BTW, you can be engaged for as long as you want... so being poor isn't a huge factor.

I had a similar situation with my roommate who could barely afford rent on time each month.

Good thing he got shot down :D
