Whenever she tries to download something from a web page, a "cannot find server" message appears after a moment of inactivity.
This happens all the time with any page.
She uses AOL dailup and has WinXP.
Any ideas?

Once she's connected to AOL, have her minimize the AOL screen and launch Internet Explorer. Try downloading through IE instead of the AOL browser.

Nope. Nothing works. Even downloading in other programs, including IE and Kazaa don't work.
It just says "an error has occured with your server/proxy."
And she already has v7.0.

What brand/model of modem is she using? I have a heck of a time with Zoom and Hayes (the ones now made by Zoom) and downloading such that I will never buy or recommend either ever again. No problems with any other brand (ESS, PCTel, Rockwell, Lucent generics. Motorola, USR, Best Data, Diamond Supra, CNet, Boca, Creative/DSI etc. etc...

She has the Encore 56k PCI Modem with MOTOROLA Chipset Voice, Data Fax ENF656- PCI2-MO Retail from newegg because it was the cheapest.
She has tried using DAP and getright, but everything's still the same in the end, can't download because the server can't be found.

If your unable to get AOL, IE,Kazza and those download utilities then I would begin to suspect that you have something wrong with your dialup connection properties .

I would suggest removing the modem in the device manager and then reboot letting XP find the card once more installing the drivers .

Then try once again .

If the modem uses the Motorola SM56 chipset THEN there is a KNOWN problem with the modem and WINDOWS XP. There is a driver/patch but I hear it only works with a clean install of XP. Easiest thing might be to get another modem. Lucent chipset, Rockwell and even PCTEL seem to work fine with XP and hold the connection. You can get a Lucent for $12 shipped off pricewatch.com or a PCTel for less after rebate at a local vendor like office max, CC or Best Buy.

Or you can do a search and try to get it to work.
