Friend brought me back an old Beatles record

Platypus

Lifer
My friend just got back from Japan and found this in a small record store in Kyoto for me.

It's a copy of 'Meet The Beatles' Apple release AR-8026
http://eil.com/shop/moreinfo.asp?catalogid=268364

However, mine does not have red vinyl, rather it's black with the standard Apple logo. The package looks identical however, and it has 14 tracks. The back is all in Japanese. It definitely appears to be old. The vinyl itself is in mint condition and the package is too aside from a bit of fading due to age. It has a nice old smell to it.

The label says MFD by Toshiba-EMI Japan.

Anyone know anything about this record? I can't seem to find mention of a black version on the net but I didn't scour too hard. I'm not interested in getting rid of it or anything I just think it's neat and I'm curious.

Sorry for the crappy pics..

Anyone know anything about this record?

Well, it's by this group The Beatles. They were very popular in the 60's and 70's and played a big influential role in today's rock music. The album, Meet the Beatles, was the band's 2nd US full length LP. The record you have is the Japanese pressing of that album. It goes for about $15 on eBay.

so if i posted up the beatles albums that i have, could i get a hidden price check too? 😀

i have a few of them, all are original from that era... lol

It's the 14 track original version by Toshiba, which is rare. I see a few going for 185 pounds on google... but they are all RED editions. The link I posted references a black one however.

Not exactly, the back of mine looks different, also the colors are a bit different. I dont know how many tracks are on that one either. That's what's weird about this one, I can't find a pic that looks similar.

Check this thread, this post in particular.

Seems like you have a later pressing of AR-8026, from 1973.

If you have the obi, it should be worth more to collectors.

EDIT: Found this. Wow. Only the Beatles would have a fansite with that level of obscure detail. There's also a book strictly about Japanese pressings of Beatle records.

Awesome, thanks! That's the exact one.

That's great that it's mono and second pressing Japanese, it's going to sound amazing.

With the Apple logo on it, it's not the original version. That SHOULD have a Capitol label.

Apple was formed in 1968 by the Beatles...that album originally came out in about January 1964.

edit: I see SludgeFactory already caught the date issue. Good find.

Yeah it's definitely not original by any means, but it's a Japanese release so it always contains extra tracks and is usually more sought after. It looks like it would fetch 100-200 pounds online from what I've seen if I had that green stripe and the insert that came with it. I don't really care, I'm just stoked to have a mono pressing from Japan, they sound a lot better.

Yea, that should sound great! Cool record🙂

Is the disc itself thinner than regular LP's?

Back during 'Nam you could get asian pressings of ALL the major hit albums, complete with sometimes hilarious Engrish misspellings on the Album jacket. They played fine, but were all way thinner than LP's pressed in the States. They were dirt cheap, though.

Kind of brings back memories.

I thought so too, he knows I'm a big Beatles fan. This isn't my favorite album by any means but I'm not going to kick a gift horse 😉

He said they had Japanese releases of TONS of 60s and 70s records, we might go back there sometime in the next year so I should research what is/isn't hard to come by and just stock up. He got this for the equivalent of like 6 US dollars 😛

Just looked at that Japanese pressing site...

Records cost 1500 to 2000 yen in the 60s ? :Q

Thats like 15 to 20 dollars!

Thats about how much Cd's cost there currently.

Wow

PM me if you have any requests 😉

I haven't found any really decent shops in my area, but then again I haven't looked hard without having anything to play the vinyl on.
