Well here`s the story...

Shuttle AK34GTR motherboard was running 256meg stick of PC3000 (OCZ yea I know...) Took out the 256meg stick and put 2 256meg sticks of PC2100 (was not going to OC an XP2000+ ) Well hit the power and within a few seconds a bad smell and a quick pull of the plug... 🙁 I pull out the first stick of memory as it was smoking slightly... 🙁 the dimm slot had started to melt and several of the gold contacts came off the PCB of the ram stick...? 🙁 Tried to boot again with the other stick in the last slot... NO GO... beeps of no memory... 🙁 Tried the PC3000 same thing... 🙁 both AK35GTR & 1-256meg stick of PC2100 DDR are toast... 😛

WTF...! Happened...? Anyone...?

BTW the memory was inserted correctly in both slots...?
Also the surviving stick of PC2100 & PC3000 are fine... as is the XP 2000+ (all checked in another board and were perfect)
RMA pending with newegg...
 
That sucks. Sorry about that. I really don't have any clue as to why it did that. I felt I needed to show my sympathy to you, though.
 
Hum, did you happen to fiddle with the voltages? Maybe you put too much juice into it? I dunno, sorry for your loses though 🙁
 
I loaned a couple sticks of Mosel to a friend.. he later told me that one stick went up in smoke. He said it was because one stick was not fully seated. I think maybe he put one stick in backwards maybe. It had worked great for me for several months in a couple boards. WHo knows?

Sorry for your troubles though friend. 🙁 Maybe one stick of ram was internally shorted? Or the mobo itself. I guess thats why we call the first boot the "smoke test".
 
is it even possible to lock the memory in the slot the wrong way with those notches on the bottom of the memory..

Only had a quick glance at your prob so could be wrong.

But could it be that you were still running at PC3000 type speeds when you inserted the PC2100 which would obviously struggle even with PC2700 speeds and voltages. Maybe a clear of your BIOS setting via a dip on you mbrd would have prevented it.

It really sucks though dude, take a baseball bat to the broken parts, it might make you feel better.
 

I had the same story.
I wanted to stick a second memory into a slot, switched the computer on and saw a burning spark and smoke. Turned off the computer immediately and checked the stick - one pin got scorched. Then turned the computer on again, only to hear the mainboard beeping - this worked so far.
I found it was my agp card that failed now 🙁. The memory was not properly seated and i must have shortened power and a bus signal. I bought a replacement vid card and the computer worked again. And I could also plug in the burned memory stick, too, and its still working 😀 !

If you've shortened two pins, too, anything could be messed up in your PC 🙁. Maybe its only the PS that failed after pulling plenty of amps from it. You should test every component in your PC in a second machine and check the memory slot on your MB carefully for shortened contacts.
 
Just to update the situation and thank everyone for the sympathy... 🙂 I had double checked myself on the installation and the memory was in correctly and was seated too... Also I had the memory timing and voltages at their lowest or auto posistions... All I can figure is the stick of ram was bad...? The brand was Spectek... I know cheap but should have been ok...?

I now have an RMA# from newegg and should get a new board in a few days... 🙂

Now is Spectek a company...? If so anyone have any info on them...? RMA route...?

spectek is the crap corsair uses in their "value line".
when I asked an engineer at corsair if it was any good, he laughed aloud on the phone.

I did`nt have an answer but when I looked them up I found they are NOT Corsair as you stated... You need to get your facts straight before answering someones questions... If you doubt me check the link... 😉 uh Bozo...?

just because your ram is not corsair doesnt mean spectek does not outsource for corsair's value line

your ram would not say corsair if you did not buy it as corsair
