This is my first post @ Anandtech however I have posted this problem on the forums @ Sysopt and would like the opinions of a different group of experts. Here it is:

I bought a MSI K7T pro2a and a 1 gig t-bird with a FOP38 about a week ago. Everything worked fine. Of course I couldn't leave well enough alone so I decided to try the old pencil trick so I could overclock this baby.

I took everything back apart and connected the bridges using a pencil. I AM 100% positive that I didn't cross any of the bridges. I slapped everything back together and wanted to test it out. ---- But here is the key ----- Instead of clipping he fan/hs back onto the proc I just kinda held it on the core and pressed down. I know, I know VERY STOPID!!!! Well in any case I turned it on and ....

The fans spin for LESS THAN ONE SECOND and then NOTHING!!!
Now I can't get anything to work. I can reset the CMOS and once again the fans will spin for less than a sec and then nothing. If I take the proc out the mobo seems to run ok. I put it back in and nothing.

Here is the various opinions so far:
1) Bad power supply.
I don't think that this is the case because I am using the same power supply on my system right now and everything seems to be ok right now. The Athalon does draw a lot of power though.

2) Bad mobo. Once again I don't think this is the case. The mobo worked fine before and I didn't even touch it. It also works ok without the proc (or seems to anyway)

3) Fried the proc. This seems to be what happened but I have a really hard time believing that I could fry the proc in less than a second without proper cooling. I don't know though.

Well I would like to hear your opinions on this matter. Thanks for the look!

Brian

P.s. Does anyone out there live in Chicago and have a socket A mobo? I would really like to test this cpu out rather than sent it all the way to California to get it tested.

Thanks again,
Brian

1. Did you install the CPU only and try the PSU?
2. Can't really tell but you know power is going to the mainboard right? Also make sure that all the case switches and LEDs are correctly installed.

Now onto 3, but first a sidenote. I once installed my cpu and heatsik but without any fan. Let it run until it got very hot. Did this testing two heatsinks I had. Anyway neither fried and it didn't make that "pfft" sound.

3. This is probably what happened. What do the Dleds tell you? All red right? Try removing the pencil marks and properly inserting it[CPU] into the socket, make sure it is in there by gently pushing on the cpu (in each corner) after insertion (make sure you are grounded). Now install the HS/F properly and fire it up. I'm assuming you've done this but in case you haven't please do. Always troubleshoot every possibilty before giving up.

I have to agree with RENOB. You know that holding the hsf was not good. Have you removed the pencil and tried again ?? Have you checked and triple checked that all connections are good ?? Any chance that you shorted something on the mobo while 'holding' the hsf ??

BTW, have a good 'story' ready when you ask for an RMA:

"Just powered the system on and nothing happened, honest" !!

I'm assuming you tried to power it up 2 times in a row, as it's been my understanding that the first time you power up the system, it will only power up for a second and requires you to power it up a second time. That's been my experience with AMD systems that I have installed and your symptoms seem to indicate that that is what you are experiencing, ie: after clearing the CMOS it powers the fans again for i second. Try powering it up 2 times in a row and this time install the fan properly.

I sent it back. They will test it. I don't think it was my fault though. You should see how muck flack I am getting over at the SYSOPT forums for returning it. Everyone is calling me an unethical bastard for sending it back. Maybe it's time to leave that board for good.

If your chip had the four rubber feet on it when you held it in place,
the core was not touching the heatsink. these pads are easy to press
one at a time, but all four take a good bit of force to compress.

Im wondering how long it ran when you think you fried it?? Have you tried a different cpu in your Mobo?? I allways keep a few extra durons around to troubleshoot things like this.
