fried cpu?

Im building a system with a Athlon XP 1900+ and a Soyo Dragon Plus motherboard. I also installed the SK6 heatsink and fan and I used the thermal tape that came with it. After I put the system together, I tried booting it up and only the fans came on and nothing else happened. I disconnect everything so it was just the mobo, cpu and ram, still did the same thing. I even tried taking the mobo out of the case and onto the tabletop. After playing around with it for a while, it started to turn off as soon as I turned it on. I took the heatsink off and the edge of the thermal paste was on the edge of the cpu core. The core did seem to be burnt a little bit. There even appears to be a tiny chip in the outside of the core. Time to buy a new cpu?

That sounds bad...what do you mean it looks burn't?

It might be a bad cpu, but first before you RMA it, scrape off the burnt area gently. Then apply some heat compound like Artic Silver II and replace the hsf and try again.

You can also try this: If you have access to someone else's computer that you can test it out on, try your cpu on that one, and then try their cpu on your mobo. Best of luck.

You can also perform a smell test by just sniffing around the cpu, ram, and motherboard to identify if anything burnned badly. Look for a distinct burnt cheese smell.

sounds like processor also to me. if you have another processor try that out first.
