Fried CPU = Fried mobo?

A friend of mine fried a duron cpu when the fan came loose and the smell of smoke started to come out of his case 🙂 And now he's given me the motherboard but I wonder if the motherboard is fried as well. I don't want to buy a cpu just to test it out if I have no idea if it even works. Thoughts?

socket a cpu's are really cheap these days... just buy one and test it out.
i seen 700mhz duron for like $20 shipped. if u're lucky.. it'll be retail with hsf too 😛

Unless you see burn marks on the CPU socket, then there is a good chance the motherboard survived. This assumes that someone who did not install the HSF properly did not make other mistakes installing the motherboard that would have killed the motherboard seperately or that caused the motherboard to fry the processor.
