Maybe it's just the jpeg compression he's commenting about. They don't seem hideous to me.

xfree86, most common X implementation (it's what you would be using if you were running linux)
window managers are the programs which actually implement workspace functionality in X
more window managers

Wallpaper is overrated and only distracts your eyes. Icons and toolbars just get in the way
