freud and pyschoanalysis

Hi all I know this is totally off topic, but I was wondering how some of you feel about freud and his relation to the modern psychological theory? From my experience many clinical psychologists seem to disown him and refer to him as a figure of the past. Also, how would you rate Freud in the top 10 most influential thinkers of all time? Higher than Jesus? Einstein? etc.

jesus is not a thinker he was thought up by some brillant marketing manager of the christian church (you like that?) einstien he's up there...I dunno if freud'd go on my list...I think it'd be philosphers and mathematicians

Hmmm... I've taken a Psych course and my opinion is that most Psychologists are freaking douche bags. Why do they all think they're so much better than everyone, like they can delve into your mind or something. I dunno, but it seems like a lot of them are on a petastool, and they're really only masters of the obvious. I dunno, but maxim had a good article on psychologists, and I agree that the feild gets more attention than it actually deserves

Freud is not the greatest psychologist of all all time, some of his views are valid. Many are only valid if applied under the same circumstances freud observed them. i.e. Vienna in late 1800 early 1900. His theories were based upon what he observed in a small group, thus many of them were false when applied to the rest of the world.

Freud was a coke addict. Coke addicts don't strike me as great thinkers. Sheesh...Bill Gates has done more for human kind then Freud.

His whole method of psychoanalysis is a joke. It's time consuming, expensive, and often times very inaccurate. The only person who comes out ahead in a psychoanalysis situation is the "psychologist" who is lining his/her pockets from people who should have seeked *professional* help in the first place.

freud basically made a lot of sh*t up and said stuff that came out of his ass. he didn't base his theories on anything other than his wild guess

Freud was the first to even consider sexuality in children. Before him, issues of sex were never considered in children. Basically, he was the first to even consider that children had their own personalities, etc. Mosts of Freuds theories weren't right, but that doesn't preclude him from being one of the more influential historical figures. He popularized psychology for one. You guys remember Newton? He was a pretty influential fellow, but he got some stuff wrong too.

agree with spoon, while freud's theories are out of favor now, there is no doubting the impact he had on psychology. he was the guy that came up with the whole idea of a subconscious!

yobarman, most of the psychologists i meet are pretty nice people. do they scare you or something?

Most psych majors that I know are either Chemistry or Biology major dropouts. They couldn't hack *real* science classes so they had to drop down to psych.

I should watch what I say though...I do have a psych minor It goes along oh so well with a CS degree

What type of psych course did you take? If it was a flaky introductory or social psych course, I can understand how you came to such a conclusion. Psych is a very large field. There is psychology with a good scientific basis: e.g. learning and behavior, cognitive science, etc. Then there is crap like psychoanalysis. I was a biopsychology major (basically neuro with some psych thrown in) and I had the same initial impression some of you did. Then I took my learning and behavior course (lots of neuro) and found out just how tough psych could be.

You should take some more courses before coming to a conclusion like that. I could say, I took one programming course and my opinion is that most programmers are antisocial geeks

Funny that you mention it. Med students do enjoy making fun of dental students.
