Fresh XP install

Once upon a time there was a post or a link which listed all the goodies to install after a fresh install of xp. Anyone know where to find it??

first things I would get are a firewall ( Norton ), spy-ware remover ( Ad-Aware ), and the internet going.

I completely disagree. You install software after you have done the service pack, chipset, then the rest of the drivers.

i recently reinstalled this was the order i went about things:

1. network connectivity
2. video driver
3. windows update (1. service packs, critical updates/patches, 2. directx 9.0, 3. windows media player 9, 4. .NET framework)
4. antivirus / spyware and malware utilities.
5. peripherals, for me i had a tv card, printer and sound card to add.
6. configured IE and OE.
7. install all other software (games, office suite, IM clients, etc).
8. Create a system restore point, if you bother with that.

9. make a ghost image of the drive so you won't have to do all that stuff again.

IMO:

1. SP1
2. Direct X (then any other XP updates if you have them saved)
3. chipset drivers,
4. onboard/mobo feature drivers
5. "important" drivers - video, soundcard etc
6. other/peripheral drivers
7. FW & AV
8. http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
9. ghost backup

dude, how often do you reinstall/reimage? I try to ghost my fresh install, but everytime i want to restore, it's been like a year or two, and all my drivers and everything are obsolete. Half the time the OS itself is obsolete...

For the time & effort it takes to ghost, vs. the time and effort it would take if you mess up, it's well worth it IMO - even if the mess up isnt too likely; 15mins of doing something else which ghost does its thing is worth a fractional chance of it saving several hours of XP reinstall, driver etc install, windowsupdate (on 64k isdn...), and probably the same again just fiddling.

I usually keep my fresh install ghost plus the most recent ghost image done (which will have the most recent drivers, and everything else I've installed). A screwup means going to the most recent ghost, and when deciding its time for a fresh install I just use that ghost, which at most means uninstalling & reinstalling a driver or two.

in install XP then i install norton, then i plug it into the netework and get updates and drivers and such

this is because my school network is swimming in virii, my bud just installed XP and installed norton 4 days later, he then had 31 virii and it almost made him have to format and start over

yeah that's the reason i still ghost fresh reinstalls. Even though i have yet to actually use one of them...

Also its a good idea to run defrag. According to the help file;

"Defragmenting after installing software or installing Windows
Defragment volumes after installing software or after performing an upgrade or clean install of Windows. Volumes often become fragmented after installing software, so running Disk Defragmenter helps to ensure the best file system performance."
