Fresh off the boat asians and designer clothing?

Firstly, I must preface this by saying that I love asian people, and understand many recent immigrants work harder than I can even imagine. This is not a post about judgement, but curiosity.

I've noticed around Queens NYC, that a lot of young asians who speak very little english seem to wear very nice, designer clothes. They can't speak a lick of english but are wearing $500 outfits. I specify Queens in particular because it's not a touristy area, and there are no prestigious colleges around (I'd understand rich Asians attending Columbia or NYU, but don't think the foreign student population is very high in an outer borough).

How can they afford to dress like this?

no stinkin idea. My roommate made the comment that he thought I was a FOB when he first saw me due to my shirt lol. He came from NY

1) How do you know how much their clothes cost

2) How do you know if they are authentic

3) How do you know if they don't speak English or are just pretending

4) How do you think they afford the Boeing tickets

5) How do you think they afford anything at all (parents)

So you've noticed it as well?

Of course I'm not saying that ALL fobs wear designer threads. In fact, I feel really bad for the factory workers of chinatown - they often were slippers in the winter... It's really sad, and I'm not trying to imply anything by my question.

Asia is super Metrosexual. Have you not seen Japanese Anime or Korean culture?

Oh, and just because their clothes look nice or flashy, doesn't mean they aren't $1 POS knock-offs.

Credit Card Debt? Same concept as many women out there, they want to look good and willing to be in debt to do so.

You should do a survey in front of AX and A&F

Somewhat. Never really thought about it. I just know I avoid from FOBs like the plague.

Remember also that the Asians who come to the US are the ones who have the means to come here. For the most part we're not getting peasants from backwater villages, but instead some of the more well-to-do from the larger cities. Being a FOB is a cultural, not a financial thing.

What I really want to know is WTF is up with those ridiculous full face shades that only middle aged Asian women wear? They look like welding masks.

How about some examples of the $500 designer outfits you speak of? I live in downtown Manhattan and the most common brand I see Asians wear is A&F. In fact since A&F[the one at Seaport] is on my way home from work, I often see them carrying A&F bags walking towards Chinatown[I assume they're going home] so as far as that is concerned, I'm pretty confident they are not wearing knockoffs. Where they get the money is another story.

Most of the asian people coming to America now are Chinese mainlanders. Their childen are typically the only child, and their family is typically from new money. This results in spoiled kids with parents who show their money off by buying them name brand clothing.

This is contrasted with the previous generations that were relatively poor and came for higher education, and typically came from Taiwan.

Asians make some pretty good money running groceries, nail salons, and dry cleaners.
And just because they don't speak english well doesn't necessary mean they are FOBs. They could have lived here for 20 years and never bothered to learn a lick of english. Because there are so many asian sub-communities in NY, you really don't need to to get by.

Plus a lot of the people that come to America are well off anyway.

I live in Flushing in Queens and see this all the time. I always thought they were knockoffs. Most of the women also carry knockoff Coach or LV bags.
