just installed xp to see if i can shutdown and it fully shuts off. and only to see that it comes up with a screen thats says it is safe to turn pc off. a couple months ago the computer would turn off completely like a new computer would today. is there a bios setting or a windows setting to fix this. thanks.

Right-click My Computer and go to Properties. Under the Hardware tab, go to Device Manager and expand the Computer node. What do you have listed?

You have a non-ACPI HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) installed. You need to install an ACPI HAL in order for Windows to automatically power off.

First, download the latest BIOS update for your motherboard from Gateway.
Then, follow the instructions here and run a repair install of Windows. When you finish reinstalling, your computer in device manager should be listed as "ACPI PC"

Of course, that's assuming that Gateway has released an ACPI-compliant BIOS... Usually Windows makes intelligent decisions about which HAL to install, and if it didn't pick ACPI then it decided that the BIOS wasn't truly ACPI-compatible...
