Hey Guys,

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I just sold my old Athlon64 3200+ system to a friend. It was running perfectly a week or so ago with my old hardware. The only things I've taken out of it are my soundcard, hard drive and cd-rom.

Now, after installing windows it BSOD's on us and restarts. Before finishing the windows install it was doing this. Several reboots later it let us finish the install but now every time windows boots it BSOD's on us immediately and doesn't stop to let us read it.

After reading various posts on forums through google I've tried unplugging the CD-Rom's power as to disable it. I've tried changing the voltage of the memory up 1 and down one. Has anyone experienced something similar or can you suggest what I should try to alleviate this issue. We'd like to have it up and running this evening.

Could it possibly be something related to one of the new components. That seems to be my guess.

Update:

After some tweaking around in the BIOS, I upped the CPU voltage to 1.4v from 1.35.

Boots into windows now, but now when I try to install anything, it tells me "The Install engine (ikernal.exe) could not be launched" "The RPC server is unavailable". Because I have having such an issue installing it before, could the XP install be corrupted? Should I try a reinstall?

Maybe the CD you installed from was bad? I've had a few failed attempts using a pretty scratched up CD. Might also run memtest to see if RAM is ok...

I don't think the CD was bad. Everything went ok. Everything seems alllll right so far. Except the CD rom which I've made a new post about.

I had the same problem with a Win2k machine at Work, would report the same STOP error that you were getting at random. Turned out to be faulty RAM, no problems since.

Well this post really belongs in the tech support or software forums. The IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is usually an indication of a faulty driver or more likely in your case a problem with your memory. It seems now that you would be better off doing a clean install of XP, I would also reset your BIOS to clear any tweaking you have done. When you go to install XP, make sure it's a clean install, and don't change any of your BIOS settings, leave them all at defaults.

Yup,ditto on the RAM everyone else is mentioning. Happened to me with a stick of only 1-2 year old Corsair memory. Shesshhhh......

Run a memory tester program, you'll find out pretty quick which stick is bad.
