SETTING UP A NEW INSTALL OF WINDOWS
The reason I am doing this is mostly to have a guide to refer to myself when windows decides to head south. I hope that it will prove helpful to others as well

STEP 1: get ready
In order to do a successful fresh install of windows I have the following things at the ready

Coffee
A copy of windows
Any sata or other 3rd party drivers on a floppy
Copies of the following free software on cd
Zone alarm
Spybot s+d
Drivers on cd or even better the original motherboard cd
Drivers for vga card
I also have memtest and all the 3d marks as well as performance test and aquamark.
I download service pack 1 for xp and have that on a cd.
You will also need a good antivirus program and I recommend Norton or MacAfee there are also other free alternatives but I don?t completely trust them also take the time to have a current copy of updated virus definitions
STEP2. install windows
Pop in the windows cd and any other 3rd party drivers put in the floppy drive. boot up get intobios and set the bios to boot from cd first followed by your system drive if your system drive is sata or SCSI then make that your second choice
While your there disable boot from floppy for the moment and boot up floppy seek these waste time during boot so I disable them until I need them.
Restart and when bios says boot from cd press any key. {Side note if you are using sata or SCSI to boot from unplug all other hard drives but the system! setup detects all of the drives and makes things messy if you need to remove or lose a drive later. also your system drive will not be c: why take a chance with your data.}
When you see the first 2 color screen and you have any sata or SCSI devices as system, start pressing f6 like a banshee. That will let windows look for the drivers on the floppy. You did remember to make that floppy right?
If you have no 3d party drivers to install let windows finish loading files. At this point you get to the disk setup portion of xp, this is where you choose what drive to install to. Chose the only one there is as you unplugged all of the other HDDS. If you have a broken windows you can delete and reinstall at this point without losing everything else on the drive but this is messy with program files etc all jacked up.
For a fresh install of windows choose the system disk and if it has not been partitioned do so. You will be then taken to a format screen choose NTFS quick unless the drive has stuff on it then do a regular format.
Windows will now load files for a few moments and then reboot. if you set the bios correctly the boot from cd will time out and you will see the multi color GUI. Windows setup will then get your cd key ?I have mine memorized? name and time zone information. The only version of windows I have not installed is xp home so there may be some other registration steps I am not aware of.
Once you get this done get another cup of coffee and watch the show.
In my experience win xp is the easiest and NT 4 server the hardest install if you are using NT or NT server there will be other more valuable sources of info than this guide. When setup is complete you will need to configure your network I use DHCP so I choose auto detect ip and dns if you have dsl have your nat and pri sec dns server addresses ready. Before windows finishes setup I also strongly recommend turning off or disconnecting any high speed internet connections at this point so you don?t get blasted or hit by a sasser.

STEP3 configure and raise shields
Once you get into windows ?man it boots quick when its fresh?.
Go to the control panel and find network connections if you have a nic that loads with windows drivers and a always on internet connection you have about 30 seconds if your lucky to right click your nic go to advanced and turn on the firewall if you didn?t unplug the cable or turn off the modem. If you did and you don?t see any network connections don?t worry they will be there shortly. Either way now install zone alarm that will stealth your machine to buggy?s. After a reboot got to the zone alarm control panel and choose stealth mode. Now if you have a working nic plug it in, also turn on all internet equipment
Pop in your mother board cd and load the drivers I recommend going to your mother board manufacturers website and download the latest, reboot again and once you are in install vga drivers. Reboot ?getting a little slower now huh? once in install any other devices such as sound cards etc. one good way to do this is to have the drivers in the disc and going to start right click my computer choose manage this is for xp but get to the device manager . once there look for any yellow device and right click and choose update driver. if you have the proper drivers on disk windows will find them and install them choose ignore and allow to any logo testing warnings. Go through and set up all yellow devices and your done. Reboot
Now you may have noticed I have not mentioned any virus software yet that is because virus software gets in the way and can even break a new install of xp if you are loading drivers and configuring. Well now is the time install your virus protection and the latest definition updates. Reboot ? man it?s a lot slower now? install service pack 1 or 2 etc ?disable auto protect in antivirus for this?
STEP 4 test it out
Go to www.grc.com and go to shields up find the probe page and test your shields. If you do not come back as stealth than you have a serious problem but I imagine you will see all green. It?s a good feeling being safe isn?t it.
Install Spybot , ad aware , all of the 3dmarks and aquamark also try out performance test I like it a lot and it gives a wealth of information in detail as well as other benchmarks to compare to it trial ware but I bought it http://passmark.com/download/index.htm
If you need to do stability testing use burn in test or prime 95 torture test.

Well I hope this helped some people email me if you like webmaster@all-grip.com
