Is it all leg meat or is there body meat too? Can't tell from the pic.

The legmeat accounts for the top third. Underneath that is the body meat.

I've been to San Fran recently in the past year for leisure once and business another. First meal I eat when I arrive, and when I leave is Dungeness crab + Anchor Steam. Does not get any better than that out there IMO.

Lobster is so overrated. I do like occassional lobster tail to go with my steak but no lobster can compare to crabs.

I even prefer shrimp to lobster.

I agree, ocean shrimp are awesome. Just try to stay away from farmed shrimp. If you saw the video, "Farming the Seas," it would gross you out at the polluted water, diseases and how they pour in vast quantities of antibiotics to save the dying prawns.

Ocean prawns have real flavor though.

ohmahgawd! tteh prawns are dying?! save teh pr0ns! 🙁

I used to fish for crab in Alaska. It is generally thought by all the fisherman that Dungeness is the best tasting crab. King crab is easier to eat, but not quite as tasty. Once in awhile I'll buy a 5 pound can of frozen dungeness for $70.00 a can. The last one I bought had too many shell fragments.

Fresh Crab

Today I went to Costco and bought two 1 pound plastic cartons of fresh Dungeness Crab meat for $14.99 a pound. I ate half with no shell yet. It's from Oregon. This is December 2, and it has a pull date (not really a pull date, but must freeze by) of December 9th, it's fresh. My second favorite seafood since I get fresh abalone.

It's not that I have so much money, but this is the best I've had. I couldn't resist buying 2 pounds today. I used to get all the crab I could eat, but when you work with it all day, it's no longer attractive.

San Leandro Costco (East Bay) to be specific. I'm sure other Costcos have this.

..I go to the airport costo in SF. I love all that stuff. Lately I've been buying those 2" thick tuna steaks and pan frying em. gawd their gooood. 😀

Damn, your Pacific crabs put our Atlantic crabs to shame. Soo much harder to get meat from blue crabs here in Maryland...gotta eat like 3-4 of them just to fill up.

How do you pronounce dungeness? Is it Like Tony Dungy or more Dung Beetle? How big are the actual crabs? Do they have big claws and legs or is most of the meat in the body? Can you eat them soft-shelled?

I guess I'll have to try them when I go to SF in a few weeks.

Dungeness crab meat is a subtle flavor. Consider that so you don't wipe out the taste.

1. Dip it in salted melted butter and enjoy with fresh baked bread.
2. Mix it with mayonaise and make a sandwich on toast.
3. Chop up some lettuce, add sliced tomatoes, sliced hard boiled eggs, add your crab, drizzle with 1,000 island dressing. This is called a Crab Louie.
4. I've used it in my homade bouillbaise, chicken stock, Italian tomato soup, vermouth, cod, clams, shrimp, and crab. Serve with bread.

I've eaten a lot of this plain recently. When I camp at the ocean, we eat a lot of fresh caught fish. I often cook that in cooking oil spray for less grease taste. Fresh fish is often sweet tasting. Someone mentioned seafood benedict the other day which would be hollandaise sauce on top of it. I suppose on an English muffin.

Buy whole live crab at local asian market which has tanks. Pay $2.99 - $3.49/lb.

Bring em home, place in bath tub with fresh water to keepalive nad happy while large pot is brought to a boil. Boil for 12-15 minutes.

Clean the body, eat with butter and sourdough bread. Sam Adams light for me.

FYI fisherman are being paid $1.80/lb by the processors this year for dungeness.

They were giving out samples at the Richmond Costco when I was there last week. They also had prime rib for sampling... man I couldn't get out of that area for the longest time.

yummy

Costco is always fun for a mini-feast, but you got the high end foods.
