Fresh 830 SSD... not looking good

Hey guys, went ahead and pulled the trigger on a 830 samsung SSD. Looked to be a solid upgrade for my system. However i do not have SATA 3 on my mobo, only sata 2. So i knew i was ganna take some hit on speed. But then i ran AS SSD. And well

Im by no means a expert but i have been looking to see how other ppl with this drive are benchmarking in sata 2 and i just dont know what the deal is. 22mb 4k-64Thrd compared to most other ppls 160 or so. just going off multiple benchmarks ive seen. Drive is aligned and running on my intel port on asus p7p55d evo mobo. Any idea's whats going on here

Try backing it up, secure erasing it, then restoring it.

Sry shoulda added this in, yeah latest firmware on it. I literally installed win7 bout 10min before testing this benchmark :/

You're running in IDE mode instead of AHCI.

Either secure erase, change your SATA controller in BIOS to AHCI and reinstall or do the registry hack, then change to AHCI.

Remember to install the latest Intel RST drivers when you have finished.

As Coup27 suggests, make sure you are in AHCI mode and not ATA. Also, suggest you install the SSD Magician software that came with your 830 (should have) - it will check all of that and keep you informed. There is no current firmware upgrade. (Those are bandaids for sloppy engineering.) The Magician CD should be version 3.1. Version 3.2 is now available on line from Samsung.

No, they are your storage drivers and will optimise the overall performance of the drives connected to the ports, whether they are in AHCI or RAID mode.

+1 listen to coup OP he knows what he is talking about.

You should be able to switch it without doing a reformat of windows.

I think you picked up an excellent drive prices on these right now are great as they are clearing stock for the newer models.

Please show us another screenshot once the switch as been made I would like to the SATA II performance as I may put one of these in an laptop that doesn't have SATA III.

Ok guys really aprecciate the fast responses. Now my excuse is i just had my appendix out and clearly wasnt thinking properly when i installed the drive .

So yes it was in IDE mode, made the changes needed and re-tested. Heres the sata 2 speeds for those who are interested. Love the drive thanks guys.

What motherboard do you have? If its a modern one then you should be using RST instead of msahci

There is nothing wrong with your Sammy 830 my friend. The speed at which youll boot and launch apps etc will be the same sata2 or 3 ,, only thing sata 3 brings is double the bandwidth to 500mbps if your doing bulk copies that is good. dont sweat it until you get a new comp new sata 3, youll see there is no diff, except it brings 500mbps to the table.......

I boot up in 15 seconds. PS CS6 launches in 2 seconds. OS soo snappy everything instant. thanks you gl

Anything you buy with computer/electronics parts you should be testing it to make sure its performing as it should. There shouldn't have to be a error that comes up or something not working.

Make this a habit and part of your mind set.

This and many other habits is the difference between u on a computer and your grand parents. Should should wants to know how everything works and that its running optimally.

Is this registry hack a universal hack? I'm currently stumped on my laptop. I can't seem to find where to change the controller to AHCI in the BIOS. I'm trying to load xp on an ssd to qualify for the w8 upgrade and it doesn't see my ssd at install. I've tried partitioning it and aligning it and xp still doesn't see it. Wondering if this could be a reason. I'm also considering I need to "slipstream" drivers at install but the process seems a little convulated to me.

EDIT: NVMD I found a fairly easy guide to do this.

I just installed a new 256GB Samsung 830 in my Acer Travelmate TM1872t (i3-380UM 1.33Ghz, 8 GB RAM, Win8 Pro) which is also SATA2, but I seem to be on the low side, as well. It is aligned and I installed the latest Intel 11.5 drivers, but it still seems slow. I partitioned for OS and data, but the drive is still about 50% empty (118GB Unallocated).

Are the lower speeds due to my older system, or is should I keep trying to find a way to raise the speeds?
