actually FOR drinking and driving

from the article:

"The government says road deaths fell more than 20 percent to under 5,000 in the first ten months of 2003 from the same period last year ? still among the highest rates in Europe relative to population size."

"Amid the tightened enforcement and government warnings, sales of wine in restaurants have also fallen by about 15 percent in just months, wine producers say. "

so the reduction in road deaths isn't worth the reduction in wine sales.

Yes, and people just know exactly when to stop drinking to be barely under the limit.

Exactly. I know some people who start slurring after a couple of sips of beer.

.05 BAC is rediclous. Here it's .08, and study after study has shown that people at .08 are not impaired while driving to any significant extent. Hence the reason for setting it at .08 and not the prior setting of .1%, where it was shown that impairment significantly reduced the ability to drive.

from the article, it could easily be interpreted that the winemakers would accept a slight increase in roadside fatalities if it increased wine sales.

Did any of those studies involve a risk to human life?

Anyone who attempts to defend drinking and driving is simply a narcisstic buffoon.

I think it is insane that everyone is treated the same when it comes to alcohol. Yeah I know it is impossible not to set a limit but damn.

My fiancee can have a half a beer and not be safe to drive. I can honestly drink 5 beers and still be totally safe. I have more tolorance. Technically right now, I can't go out and have more than 2 beers without being considered drunk which is just stupid.

Do I drive after 2 beers? Nope because I can't afford to lose everything I would if I got a DUI.

That's why they have it set up the way they do. Absolute max of 0.08, or apparent impairment to the officer, whichever comes first.

Drinking and driving is fine... it's DRUNK DRIVING that's bad. I drink and drive all the time, but as you said, it's only 1 or 2 beers (or more/less depending on time etc). If I feel ANYTHING but normal, no matter how slight, I don't drive.

yea if you had extremely selective vision. a more accurate interpretation is that winemakers don't believe you are a risk if you are under the legal limit.
