I must say, from what I can see of recent history (going back for the last 100 years or so), the national character of France seems to be one of arrogance, anti-semitism, and cowardice. Where are the French heroes? They have definitely made some meaningful contributions in terms of art and food, but as a general proposition I am uniformly unimpressed with their spirit.
