French group wants courts to block U.S. Racist Website

PARIS (Reuters) - A French anti-racism group is
asking for an injunction to block access to a neo-Nazi
U.S. Web portal, a move set to fuel a running debate
about Internet controls.

International Action for Justice (AIPJ), whose action
comes amid transatlantic wrangling over a separate
case against U.S. Internet service provider Yahoo!
over xenophobic sites, wants France cut off from the
U.S. ``Front14'' portal which acts as a free speech
space for racists.

Front 14's Web site, which carries the slogan ``online
hate at its best,'' offers domain hosting, web animation
and web marketing services for neo-Nazi
organizations wanting to get onto the Internet.

The site currently groups well over 400 racist Web
sites and has scores more under construction,
according to the AIPJ, which will seek the injunction in
a Paris court on June 29.

The debate pits those concerned about the
proliferation of extreme material on the Internet against
proponents of free speech and highlights the
difficulties in applying national censorship laws to the
Web.


This should be an interesting battle. Free Speech against Hate.... Frenchies trying to tell a US company what to do.... etc. What's your opinion on this?
 
About time they get some of the internet under control a little. I like free speach and all but it can go way too far sometimes.
 
I think the french should take their censorship and have some cheese with their whine:disgust:

The french can do what ever they want in their country they dont have free speech. I dont agree with the hate sites but they do have the right to say it. I just dont listen to what they have to say.
 
I can't see them getting what they want in this one...

I think that really in most cases its probably best to let these haters say what they want and we can hate them back, because if you block what they say then free speech deteriorates into "say what you want as long as..." and eventually it could become meaningless.

Of course private organizations should take all the measures they want against hate literature and sites. If I ran an ISP with this crap on it I would surely think about shutting it down.
 
Let state first that I do not agree in any way with the views on those sites. I do not even have to visit them to say that.

Now having said that, I do not think that they should be censored. Banning a thought will only give it legitimacy. Education as to the wrongs of their distorted views would be a much more effective tool to use.

I am proud of the french. I don't blame them. Its about time someone say enough is enough. No one needs to read or hear Racist material. And I hope they win. Go French, GO!
 
The French only want that site taken down because they know sooner or later(probably sooner) that they will end up surrendering to it.

I don't like some liberals messages, should they be banned?

It's easy to say it would not go that far, very hard to prove that it wouldn't.

Yes, you have the responsibility to know what your children are looking at and to enforce your views upon them. You do not have that same responsibility to everyone else in the world.
