So is it standard procedure to try to outrun/blow by the tornado, or did it catch they that off guard...

It sure looked sudden, considering the calm when the video started (typical "calm before the storm").

Tornadoes do happen so suddenly that there's usually not much time to do anything. Plus who can predict their path of destruction? Also, trains take miles to stop, so yes, their standard procedure would be to outrun/blow by it.

Wish they edited out the first 30 seconds. After that, neat.

It is called "building suspense".

😉

MotionMan

Yeah, but I was hungover and impatient when I watched it this morning. That was a little bit to much suspense.

ehhh so the wind blew the one car off the tracks... not very exciting

Except for the part where the rest of the train catches up with the front.

QFT.

I was thinking; "What is that thing in the distance coming down the tra... HOLY SHIT!!!!"

LOL.

Awesome video.

WTF is that camera mounted there for?

MotionMan

Okay,

Everyone keeps asking why the camera is mounted on the back.

It's not. It'a a forward facing camera on a secondary engine that is running in reverse. You're seeing the front of the engine there.

I know this is a pic of a model, but it shows the best angle.

Now, look at the handles in front of the cockpit:

Look familiar?

They compare exactly to what you see out the window in that video.

how is tornado formed?

thought it was going to end quickly until the rest came rolling down the tracks.

/actually I'm nws trained and a municipal weather spotter.

if i were to believe train movie special effects, the whole train even after falling over would've continued sliding for half a mile, and the tanker section that came crashing in, would've pushed the camera and the rest of the train back a few hundred meters more before exploding in a fiery mushroom... edit: with bruce willis just barely making it alive by jumping off to the side in the nick of time

but that real life vid was pretty cool nonetheless

Kinda reminds me of the video forums here. Sailing along ok until a few certain people enter the thread like a tornader' then it's off the tracks FTL 😛

Are you kidding? The stark contrast between the calm beginning and dramatic weather difference only 40 seconds in is just too shocking to edit away. It really shows how quickly things can change and yet our short attention spans can't last 30 extra seconds? Bah.

WOW! Some great footage. Something like that probably would only make the local news but I wonder how recent that it.

amazing what the power of wind can do. what about the power of earth/water/fire/air combined?
