Freezer 64 Lapping

So, as many of you Freezer 64 owners may know, the base finish on it is horrible. I tried to fix this and got a lapping kit from pcviper.net recently and just today set out to lap that horribly finished base 😀

Idle temps dropped from 43C with the original base and generic Vantec grease to 35 or 36C with the lapped base and MX-1 with no burn-in (Freezer 64 fan on about 50% speed). Load temps are about 54C in ORTHOS. Well worth the $7 for the kit and the hour or so spent lapping and polishing, I'd say.

Have you done the heat spreader? My freeezer 64 base was concave as was the heat spreader. Lapping it got me another 4 or 5 degrees. My X2 3800 @2650 idles at under 30 degrees and full loads under 60 on both cores.

Hmmm...haven't done the IHS yet, but I did buff the top of the heatspreader with the fine polishing compound to get rid of any dirt or w/e. My load temps under Orthos are about 54C on both cores, so I think they are ok for the time being.

I did do the ruler test on the IHS though and it seemed ok, so lapping that I'll probably save for another day 😀
