I heard rumors that Freewwweb filed bankruptcy and was going to refer everyone to Juno, the path Worldspy took, anyhow got the info on their start page this morning that they are history and to sign up to Juno.

Damnit!!!! I have used freewwweb for about six months now. It worked great. What more could you ask for? I had a pretty reliable 56K connection, no banner ads, and no bill. I wish broadband was available in my area.

Yeah Chuffmaster2k, I agree totally. I`ve used them since early 98 (when it cost $99 to sign up,that was for a "lifetime of free internet") and never had any probs. Hope this doesn`t give those pay ISPs a shot in the arm (who would still pay 19.95 for a dial up connection?). Anyhow this might be a good time for someone to re-post a list of free ISPs and their ratings.

I haven't used freewwweb in a while, but have signed a few friends up on it. Anyone know when it actually will stop working as freewwweb?

I know it hasen't worked in N. Jersey for a few weeks, but as of yesterday, it was working in FL and NY.

Thanks!
Lex

My dad had Freewweb and he's happy with it. Unfortuneately it went under, so he signed up with Worldshare. Back then Worldshare has free access, but right now they required you do some minimum donation such as $10 or $15 for a year of free access. Good thing is, there is no banner.

I live in NY and I've been using Freewwweb for well over six months and it's been great. Last night after a little while, I couldn't load any pages even though I was still connected to the web. I hope this isn't the end. It might push me to go for the Optimum Online cable modem.

First WorldSpy, then that other one (name escapes me at the moment) and now Freeweb? Hope this trend doesn't continue... Sooner or later we'll all be back w/ paying ISP's!

This really sucks!!
I've also been with freewwweb since mid-1998 and had paid the $99. for "free lifetime internet".

Maybe it is time for that cable modem!!?!! :D

Tomcat, if you can find a Intelogis "Passport" network kit, you could hook up that way. Hooks up through the Iopener parallel port and sends data through the electrical lines of the building to another computer, then can share an internet connection with the other computer. They were a "hot deal" item a while back, and also were at CompUSA free with rebate about 3 months ago. Maybe someone on this forum will sell you one. They work great, I have this setup myself.

Jedibus!!!!

Wait no more! Just go get Optimum Online. You won't regret it. Trust me. I canned freewwweb 3 months ago and went cable.

If you are on Long Island and do the research, you'll find that OOL is one of the best bargains in the country. One of the fastest/cheapest around. You'll get approx 2.5Mbits/sec down
and 1Mbit/sec up for $30 (and $150 startup). Speeds no NOT vary much during peak like many other cable providers.

Sorry to get so far O/T, just thought jedibus would be interested.

I started using Freewwweb right after they started a few years ago. As of last night, it was still working fine in St. Louis, Missouri area. Their e-mail system was not stable though.

Thanks stilinsm for the URL post.

Yeah, I could DL mail but it took me over a half hour to send anything. Here is a list of all the free ISPs.

http://nzlist.org/user/freeisp/

I signed up on 1nol, freeatlast, lycos, and collegeclub. I guess we gotta have backups as these bannerless ISPs keep dropping.

If you are going for Free ISP, I'd suggest having at least 2 ISP's because they are quite sketchy. Also, I would advise against using the Free ISP as an e-mail provider, unless it's webbased.

Important to note that the 2 ISP's should be on different networks.

The two major co-branding networks are: 1stup.com & Spinway.com. Spinway does Bluelight, Collegeclub, NBCi, and others - all the same network. 1stup does Altavista, Lycos, etc.

So I'd go to spinway.com - choose one (I recommend just getting the bluelight.com CD from K-mart. No banner ads on Yahoo sites, which is better than nothing).

Then go to 1stup.com and get one (I use Altavista because I like altavista search and it's in the banner ad)

You can also choose NetZero but I really think they suck and are very slow and unreliable.

Also, if you do go with a pay ISP. I'd recommend going with Costco/MSN. My dad has it and it's $11/month and they have a very reliable network. It has been down once, and I just used Altavista for that brief time.

Juno is free with a banner, $6-$20 a month without one, and they usually have a free trial for 250 hours in one month.

Juno also lets you have e-mail without Internet access, free if you don't need binaries in the messages.

Lex,

I do live on LI. I'm in Wantagh and my friend in Merrick is in the middle of a 2 month free trial with Optimum. I'm thinking about canning my computer only phone line and going with Optimum if the price isn't too much higher. I saw him download a 40 or 50 meg video in well under 5 minutes. I think it would take me two days on Freewwweb!

So I don`t post in the wrong forum next time , can someone explain why the MODs moved this from "Hotdeals" to " General Hardware". How is a ISP deal (or non-deal) a GH issue?
