Freeware Video Converstion Program - "SUPER"

Below is my original post, but you folks failed to provide the instant gratification I was hoping for when I posted this, so....

I went ahead and installed it.

So far, I'm impressed. It smoked through the 3 vids I've thrown at it.

It seems to have just about every video codec ever made and can convert between them all. It has default settings for converting video to PSP, iPod and a couple of others.

I did a post installation check with AVG, SpyBot, AdAware, MS Defender and SpySweeper and nothing showed so it seems to be 'clean'. It did try to access the 'trusted zone' but I took care of that with ZA.

Anyone else looking for something similar should consider this program.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been trying to find a good multi-purpose freeware video converter for Windows.

Basically, I have all the codecs to play anything on my PC, but I want to be able to convert to other formats when needed (PSP, iPod, etc). Looking for one app that does the widest assortment of formats.

So far, this seems to offer the most formats: Super

Review

I haven't installed it yet as I'm hoping someone has experience with it and can offer an opinion.

Any others that I should be looking at??

Thanks, in advance!

Edit: BTW, video conversion is not covered in the Freeware Apps thread at the top of the forum.

IIRC Super screwed up some filters for me (avisynth for one). It's not very good for converting to WMV, so I use either encode360 or a batch file with WME for that. This is important to me since I have an Xbox360. I also prefer to have more control over what Super allowed the last time I used it (subtitles, 5.1 audio, multiple passes, etc...)

There's also AutoMKV which coverts to/from many various formats.

Thanks for that feedback 'Gooberlx2'.

I don't have my WME HTPC built yet but that is definitely something to be leery of. I'll take a look at AutoMKV.

Took me 5 minutes just to find the download link.

They should organize it better so I can find were the hell to download it faster 😛

I'll try it. So, will this beat Virtual Dub Mod+Various other encoders? (if you know how to use them?)

Edit:
I think lack of MKV support, lack of VBR, among other things means I won't be using this any time soon.

lol 😛
Is that sarcasm I hear in that post?

After using it...
It's still a useful program none the less.
I'm still experimenting with it. I think for the "less experience" user it's good 🙂

LOL - no, strangely enough for AT that wasn't (meant to be) sarcasm.
I actually feel some responsibility for my posts - mostly in HDs - and I kind of regret it when it turns out not to be what someone was expecting. I'm glad to hear that you're still experimenting with it and hope you find it useful.

... I even edit for spelling and grammar mistakes :Q

And I think that has to be the target audience. Easy conversion from just about any format to wierd or difficult formats like WMV, PSP, iPod, 3gp, 3g2 (various phone formats), etc... Unfortunately it doesn't really allow for multiple passes for VBR audio or video, amog other things. This is what holds it back for me since I like to tweak to get the best quality/size ratio.

I've always been amazed by how tricky it is to convert to a good 5.1 WMV. You'd think, since MS released Xbox360 and Zune, that they'd release something more useful than WMM and less picky about codecs/filters than WME.

For someone who wants something quick and easy I think it's great. I use it sometimes when I just wanna do something quickly and I love it for that.

Not trying to hijack this threat but I have some questions about converting to WMV to use on the 360 also. What process do you use to convert a good 5.1 WMV? Also I'm having trouble with the aspect ratio when I replay it on the 360, it doesn't want to go to 16:9, do I have to encode it at that ratio or can I force playback.

Again sorry to hijack if you would like I could start my own topic
