Freeware VHDL simulators?

So I'm in a second-semester digital logic class focused on VHDL. I'd like to be at least able to make some progress on my homeworks outside the lab; although I won't be able to prototype to the boards from my desktop it would be nice if I had a somewhat featureful simulator, just so I can work out syntax and logic errors but I don't have high expectations.

our prof told us to use some free one from http://www.altera.com/

i downloaded an older version last year for another class and it worked fine though i dunno if it's still available. just downloaded the new version for the current class and about to install it.

The version that I linked to in my first post does not allow me to 'force' variable inputs which is a considerable limitation in proving that my design works. Does this version allow me to?

i don't know. in fact i don't know what you are talking about

Xilinx ISE WebPack is used by many schools (Google it). I prefer the Symphony EDA interface but, as you've found, it has basically no debugging capabilities.
