As someone mentioned earlier, this list NEEDS DriveImageXML. This is a great backup program, which can backup your system from within windows. You can also browse backup files and restore individual files. I've performed quite a few full system backups and resotre operations with this software (using a BartPE disk) and it works great.

Hi,

Include in the list a software called Poderosa, which is a customizable program that allows the user to Telnet/SSH and get a Cygwin session. It also has TABs that helps organizing your desktop.

List is getting better and better 🙂

Tau Analyzer is a free program, which can help you to distinguish with reasonable accuracy the original studio-based CDs from poor quality fakes, that have been "reconstructed" using a lossy audio source, such as MP3. (site is also home of True Audio lossless codec)

Hey guys, sorry I haven't logged on to the forums in a while now. I'll try to make some time this weekend to make some updates and clean up the list a bit. Thanks for all your suggestions!

Awesome tool. It easily converts videos from cell phones etc.

Can't get it to DL
Yes, yes. I second the nomination for S U P E R ©. Very capable FREE video conversion program. It is better than many payware progs. This should be your 1st stop for doing video processing.

The D/L issue is this: They lead you through about 3 pages on the site before you get to the actual d/l near the bottom of the 3rd page. By this time you have perused some of the support material prior to the d/l links. Not a bad idea. It serves to orient those of us who have a life other that full time video ripping. There are also links there to other free progs for ripping, editing, etc.

The program is actually a Graphics User Interface for some of the best free or public domain video software around. The package includes all of these necessary core pieces which are run transparently through the GUI.

So, yeah, get it on the list.

Wireshark is a free network monitoring software, which comes on Linux OSes (at least on Fedora). It used to be called Ethereal but they changed the name of it. It works in WinXP, don't know about Vista yet.

Oh, and, Netbeans also has plugins for other languages, such as C++...
If WireShark is not up on the list yet, it should be. A simple-to-install windows binary at the site for d/l. Standard for network analysis. Interesting to watch, as well.

I would highly recommend adding Foxit! Reader.

It is so much better than Adobe (So much lighter yet does everything and more)

I have run in to some rendering issues when using FOXit PDF reader. However, what you are about it being faster used to be true prior to Acrobat 8. I now find version eight and nine to be more compatable and just as fast.

there any other firewalls besides zonealarm and outpost that people might recomend

I need one too, Kerio and Sygate used to be free but no longer. Zonealarm is kind of heavy on the RAM. Sygate was very transparent until Norton got their bloody hands on it.

It took me a while to find this:

AChat

It's an open source Instant Message system for a LAN. It's server-less, doesn't require an Internet connection, or any network setup. When it runs, it detects other AChat users on the LAN. It has the basic messaging features (create channels, send private messages) but it also supports showing images and allows file transfers, as well as folder sharing.

I really wanted an easy way to share and transfer files between computers, without the hassle of configuring an actual Windows network. I found Akeni LAN Messenger, and it was perfect, except that it requires a per user license for every computer on the network. I searched for a few hours (literally) for a freeware replacement, and found AChat. And I like it even better, as file transfers are easier, and slightly faster.

There are dozens of programs that do this, but they are all marketed toward corporate use (and priced accordingly). AChat is the only one I found that is free and supports easy file sharing.

Use a mirror site... no problem.

BitDefender no longer works on server OSes. I attempted to install it on a Server 2k machine and it told me it wasn't compatible with my OS.
