Search "fax" here and in Off-topic, might need to search archived threads too.

Short answer: to send faxes without an analog modem you need a service like eFax, there is one free service but I think it's text-only and I know coverage is very spotty. Details are in the existing threads.

Whoops. I should have mentioned that I do have a modem in my computer. I just mean what program do most people here like to use. And is there a freeware or shareware version that anyone would like to recommend?

Most versions of Windows come with basic fax software, and most modems do too (if your modem came with diskettes or a CD, take a look).

For advanced faxing, you'd have to buy a program like Symantec's WinFax, which has been around for ages. You might find a closeout of an older version of it for cheap at some "outlet" vendor.

I don't think a standard installation of XP installs the necesary fax program. You would need to install it by going to add/remove programs in control panel, go to add/remove windows componets, and check the fax services box (of course you would need to insert an XP installation cd).
