So...i've got to junk pc's that're sitting around doing nothing and my fiance is in need of a website for her kindergarten class and I want to be able to share files easily through-out the house as we have 4 people and 6 pc's here, lol.

So my first question would be...can you use FreeNAS for a webserver or need different free software (i've looked a couple).

2nd question...

I have x2 40GB HDD's in an A64 3000+ w/ 1GB ram and I have an AXP 2600+ w/ 512MB ram...which should be the webserver, the one w/ more ram?

3rd question...

I've found contradicting answers here...I want to install FreeNAS on 1 40GB hdd w/ a 256mb partition and use the remaining 39.5GB for data...is this possible or can you NOT share the destination drive even if its partitioned?

FreeNAS is a NAS software NAS=Network Accessed Storage. That has nothing to do with Web Server.

Any computer running Windows can also act as a WebServer and storgae Server. There are hundreds of free Webserver programs.

It will easy and use less energy if you just use the A64 3000+ w/ 1GB ram.

Install the two Drives in. Put Windows 2000, or Windows XP on it.

The Webserver would not need more than few MB so you can have most of the 80MB space to act has network storage.

You do not need any thing more than the regular Windows Sharing Controls to make it as a Good Network Storage.
 
You'd probably be better off getting some cheap hosting for the website. I'd do this just for security (and the reliability doesn't hurt!).

It looks like, on page 10 of the FreeNAS manual, you have the option of using an OS partition and a DATA partition on the first hard drive.
 
Download your favorite Linux distro and just use apache / php / mysql. Those should work out of the box as long as you select the packages upon installation. I recommend the Fedora Core as it's always served me well but there is lot of other choices too. There may be a distro out there geared specificly for web and is easier to setup. Fedora core is usually pretty easy though. Beauty is that it's all free.

Yea...I noticed that as well. It then goes on to say that you cannot use the main drive for sharing...hehe. I might try to partition it out on my own and see if that makes any difference at all, but...i'm kinda confused on it thus far, although I did mount my 2nd drive just fine so I have a whopping 40GB! lol.
 
best practice would be to put freenas on say a usb stick or livecd and keep your storage your storage. avoid disk full interrupting your freenas partition.

but you can most certainly do whatever you want.
