Freelancer (PC game) $34.99 plus tax both B&M and online (FREE shipping)

This game just became available earlier this month. MSRP is $55 and most places sell it for $50. I've searched around and there are a few places cheaper, such as Newegg.com at $43 with free shipping or Nothingbutsoftware.com for $39 with $6 flat rate shipping, but nothing beats $34.99 plus tax with FREE shipping or B&M pickup. The current Bestbuy ad has it for that price, plus it's available at Bestbuy.com for the same price plus they currently run FREE shipping on everything. I just ordered it for myself online, being that I'm 2½ hours away from the nearest B&M Bestbuy.

Good price for a really fun game. I paid $50 at Best Buy last week, will they refund the difference if I bring in a receipt?

Space combat sim. Its sort of a mix of Wing Commander, Rogue Leader (Gamecube), and Privateer with a few RPG elements thrown in there.

Chris Robers, the creator of the Wing Commander series (amoung others), was the original project leader behind this game before Microsoft bought out Digital Anvil and he left the company.

I wasn't very impressed... Scope it at Fileplanet first.
It says subscribers only, but when I click download it shows on public servers now... I also remember seeing something about letting everyone downlaod last week. Anyhow, it's about 150mb.

That 150MB file is just the demo. You can get it (no "subscription" needed) directly from Microsoft.

Yes they will for in-store purchases for 30 days. They do not for online purchases.
Bestbuy Pricing Policy
Now, they specify that "Offer does not apply to BestBuy.com pricing" but they don't explicitly exclude their own B&M stores. I know that Circuit City advertises that they will pricematch their own ads within a 30 day period.

I thought the same thing at first but once you get used to the mouse support in this game, you no longer miss joystick support.

This is the 1st flight sim I've played without joystick support & I still consider it one of the best. Years ago playing Wing Commander I would have never thought of using anything else than a joystick but the mouse support in this game is flawless.

it was on sale at bby a week or two ago for 29.99

Can someone explain what B&M means? Man, I get so tired off constantly having to learn new lingo and acronyms for every different community.

Things like this should be added to the rules post.

YMMV, YGPM, ugh...( don't bother explaining these- I already know)

Brick and Mortar store. Physical location vs. online store.

Crap, why didn't anyone post here about it? I was looking for a deal on this game and did searches here and didn't see anything, so when I found it for $35 I thought I found a good deal.

good price on a good game. actually one of the few games to hold my attention and keep me coming back to play it for more than a week

Sorry to spoil it for everyone, but if you know the trade routes you can make 1 million dollars in about three hours. 🙂

Is this a game with high computer demands?
From Microsoft's site:
Microsoft® Windows® 98/Me/XP/2000
PC with 600 MHz equivalent or higher processor
Sound card, speakers or headphones required for audio
128 MB of system RAM
16 MB video card required
900 MB available hard disk space
8x speed or faster CD-ROM drive
Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
56 Kbps modem for online/multiplayer; LAN or broadband to run a server
Incidentally, the demo says it requires DirectX 9, but seems to run fine without it.

This is one of the better space games that has come out in several years. A direct off-shoot of the Privateer series, it offers some advantages and disadvantages, but overall a good game. The lack of joystick support seems awkward but you easily get used to the mouse. Supporting keyboard usage is a bit different but if you have the MS Strategic Commander you can easily transfer all the keys to that pad.

Though I haven't tried it, other players have said that the net play is excellent and offers alot of random missions and capabilities. I've completed the game and will start again, taking a different tack to change alliances to see how that works.

System stress is moderate but it worked well with my setup (1.2 athalon, W98, 256 megs ram, 9500 Pro, Santa Cruz and MS Strategic Commander). Bumped up my ram to 512 and only seen marginal improvement.

If you've played any of the Privateer's or Wing commanders, and liked them, you'll like this game.

edit = system clarification

I LOVED privateer. I even liked the second one.

What kind of video card do you have? EDIT: Never mind, saw you had a 9500 pro 🙂

this game is ok. although the story is quiet intriguing, the missions needed to get to the next level is annoying. they are too redundant and no variety.

i wish they would have put more story and make them side quests.

trading is useless
