Freedompop or other mobile hotspot alternatives?

I'm working on a project for my car and would like to see current opinions on mobile hotspots.

FreedomPop seems to be the big free one and would more than suffice for my needs, but on SD and here, there seems to be a huge amount of back and forth on how much they suck etc etc etc.

Has anyone here tried these guys out and how do you like their service. Or are there alternatives I simply haven't found yet? I would only need a few 100mb a month at most and would prefer for it to be as cheap as possible. 3g is perfectly fine too.

T-mobile offers 200MB free a month for life of the tablet (don't think hotspots count, but it shouldn't be hard to tether from a tablet)

(200MB is a hard cut-off... no more data after. t-mobile doesn't need any credit card though)

Its a project to incorporate my N7 as a head unit and it isn't LTE enabled. Can the free 200mb be used to give an old phone data and make that into a hotspot?

Edit: Googled it. No it cannot. Bummer.
