Freedom of speech in computer labs gone!

Restrict porn, yes. Doing it by filters, no. Every library or computer lab has an attendant of some sort to watch the computer useage. If you get caught surfing for porn, you get one verbal warning to stop. Upon second offence all privilidges to computer useage are revoked. No if's, and's, or but's.

Actually at my univ, A&M, you can surf porn all you like. It is against the rules, but no one cares. THis is only in the general labs, the EE and Industrial Eng. labs are very restrictive.

Give me a fricking break. Free speech does not give you the right to download porn on a public computer. If this issue is so important to you, create a filter that will actually work properly, and filter X-rated content while leaving other adult themes intact. Until then, what we have as far as filtering software will have to do. I'm as much a free speech advocate as anyone else, but there have to be some limitations to what is allowed in a public place. Maybe if people didn't act like such idiots we wouldn't have these problems in the first place. As far as school computer systems go, they belong to the schools, so they have the right to restrict use however they damn well please. If the government were trying to force you to install filters on your private system, then you would have something to bitch about.

Filters are useless for this.

If you would filter out every site/page with the word 'sex' or 'porn' on it, suddenly could still access some porn sites, but no educational sites on these topics or related topics.

Porn isn't a "right" at school. Anyway when I worked in the computer lab, if I saw you looking at porn once, I'd go over to you and call you on it loud enough to let everyone else int eh room know what you were doing 🙂 If that didn't embarass you enough, I'd go get my boss to come over and he would explain the policy and revoke your login name. Oops. We don't support filters, but keeping you from looking a tcertain things, yes.

While schools may be "public", they have their own rules. Surfing that crap at school shouldn't be allowed, no matter what.

School's try to teach morals, and they usually suck at it, but allowing people to view material they shouldn't be is just wrong.

I don't know anyone who lacks the shame to be looking at porn at a library, next to other people. LOL...that's something you do in your "private" time 🙂.

I don't know about restricting access to it, simply because filters overreach and underreach content coverage at the same time. It might stop you from doing research on breast cancer, and it might not prevent the ads from popping up.

I've just about had it with people demanding their "rights" without the slightest clue of what the hell they are talking about.

How in the world does "freedom of speech" mean "freedom to look at porn at taxpayer expense"? What is the "speech" that is being restricted? Puh-leeze.

But the interesting thing to me is the problem that the librarians now have. On one hand, they forcefully argue against any kind of filters in the library, and now they want to claim sexual harassment if people view porn. Kind of tough to resolve that one.

Kranky you hit the nail on the head!

Freedon of speech does not give you the right to view anything at my expense. Same with work. You want to view PRON Look at home on your own computer at your cost. I can understand why filters are looked down on because of there inherant ineffectiveness but, the other option is no internet. There are decency laws (i.e. you can walk down the street naked) I feel the library should be able to tell you to leave if you are caught looking at Objectional material.

I have no problem with freedom of choice but not on my dime!

The sad part is It will ruin it for alot of people who accually use the internet at the library for legit purposes.
