FreeBSD or Linux

I was looking at both and it seems that BSD is more secure stable and a bit more usable then linux, but I am concerned about lack of applications. Basically I want to be able to run most linux applications as well as WindowMaker as my GUI. I want a Graphical install too

FreeBSD can run most (if not all) linux apps fine. I don't know about WindowMaker. There's no graphical install, but trust me, it's quite simple. IMO installing Debian/Slackware was more difficult

Either should be fine. I thought FreeBSD was better than RedHat/Mandrake (this was a while ago), but Debian and Slackware compete pretty well with it. Slackware's only shortcoming (and depending on how you like to do things this may not be a shortcoming) is there is no package management. Ports rocks.

Just because I have to mention it, I found OpenBSD to be a much cleaner OS.

I highly recommend linux. Never tried FreeBSD but anyone helping out in developing FreeBSD is inadvertly helping out Microsoft making their products more stable. The reason
I say this is because Microsoft has (even admittly) stolen a LOT of code from FreeBSD. Sad part is, because of the license, they do it legally too

I still recommend linux.

If you are choosing between *BSD and Linux, you might be interested in Gentoo. It takes the best of *BSD and combines it with best of Linux to create one kick-ass Linux-distro . I'm currently running Debian, but I'm planning to migrate to Gentoo sometime in the future.
