During my install of freebsd 5.3, it starts recognizing hardware, and when it gets to the CD drive it stops. I have tried a differant drive, so that has nothing to do with it. Any suggestions?

Remove the cd. Check the md5 of the iso. Reburn. Did you let it sit for a while? Did you check the archives?

Yeah it has been sittign for a while, but why would it work up until it recognizes the CD rom during hardware recognition?

No clue. Things like that are one of the reasons I stopped using FreeBSD.
