I know that this modem was mentioned in a previous thread about hot deals at Best Buy this week, but there was some question as to whether the Award Technology PCI modem would work under Windows XP. I figured that it was at least worth a try. Well XP detected everything and used its own drivers and now I'm connected at 49K (something I have not been able to do with even the best Creative and Zoom Hardware modems at my house). Not bad for a freeebie.

Hey even better... the rebate is for 30$ so the modem is FREE...

two rebates total: 25$ with award and 5$ with best buy... :)

Thanks pannam1. I just checked my receipts and it really is free after rebate. Edited the topic accordingly.

It is out of stock at my area, so I tried to order it online.
However, there is an order charge of $5.00, what the hell is that?
Anybody has a clue?

I believe they add this in if you don't choose in-store pickup. It's like a shipping charge. However, if you DO choose in-store pickup, and your local store doesn't have it in stock, I believe they will NOT charge you the $5 order charge, and ship it to you. So try choosing in-store pickup, and you should be good to go :)

I can't choose pickup in my local store, because it is out of stock there.
Only two other stores are listed, but they are too far away from me.

I called CSR of Bestbuy, they told me to wait for it to be in stock again...
This is really bad, I have to give up.....

not in a hurry to get a modem now, because I am using cable to get online.
Just want to have that as a backup, if it is free. So I gonna pass...

I like lucent chip based modem. But it's weird that this one doesn't have a speaker on board. Too quiet for me;)

Their driver CD sucks. Only support 95 & 98. Fortunately my w2k is good enough to have the driver itself.

Working for an ISP for over 3 years, I can say with some athority that LT Winmodems are indeed the finest software based modems available. They're very configurable, widely supported, and can make a 56K connection through two tin cans an a piece of string. Unlike the USR modems, which report a high connect speed and give you about 75% of that in throughput, the LT Winmodem gives a very accurate connection speed (what you see is what you get). I give it three thumbs up!

I always turn the speakers off on my modems. The quietness of it makes me think I'm on a network. :)
