I personally am gonna wait for a smaller downloadable version (that 200mb+ one has extra stuff that isn't needed for Win XP Home) so I can create a slipstream xp since my XP is the original pre-sp1 version.

You need the network installation file for slipstreaming. The small file won't work.

Thanks, I live out in the country. Not only is broadband not an option (can't afford the whole satellite package right now), but the best I can connect at is around 19Kbps! Has something to do with the telepphone switching equipment between where I live and the nearest city large enough to have hosts.

Uhm, no. Supposedly, the blacklist of illegal serial codes was expanded in sp2 and if you have them and install sp2 you are sunk. It will let you install sp2, but after reboot it will bring up the "lets activate windows" prompt. You will have to system restore just to boot again. That's what I heard....
BTW: The new wireless wizard absolutely rocks.
Any way to find out what illegal serial codes are blocked by SP2?

Also, how does one go about this SlipStreaming process of putting WinXP Pro (non-SP1) together with SP1 & SP2, so new installs are fully updated?

The advantage of having the network version is you can use it to slipstream SP2 with your windows install disk to create a combined Windows XP/SP2 install disk for future installations. People who ordered their disks when they were first available are receiving them now. Mine came in the mail yesterday.
How difficult is it to do that?

- extract SP2 without installing it
- make a bootable cd
- copy all original files from the original XP cd onto the bootable CD, except the I386 folder
- copy the I386 folder from the extracted SP2 archive onto the CD
- BURN

Guide to slipstreaming

EDIT: SP2 includes all the fixes from SP1, so you only need to worry about slipstreaming SP2.

When you install XP using a slipstreamed CD, you don't need to install SP2 afterwards. SP2 will be integrated in your fresh XP install. Saves quite a bit of time if you are building a new system.

SP2 SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I installed it yesterday on 2 occasions after reformatting my drive before both times and it wouldn't even work right after I installed it. Reformatted and installed SP1 again and all is well. I wait til all the bug fixes are done.

Maybe it's something with my A64 system and 6800GT, I dunno.... Whatever.....

You can use the "network" one just fine for single computers. Microsoft just doesn't want everyone to download it and hog up their bandwidth. That's why they claim it is a "network" SP2. It works fine for 1 comp. Download and burn to CD. There...you have your SP2 faster than MS can ship it.

Got mine today. I don't like this security center for a couple reasons. First, the antivirus doesn't interact with norton, norton says everything is okay yet the security center says to check norton and that damn balloon won't go away (so I'm handling my antivirus for now). Second, it won't let me choose to alert me with updates then choose when to download them or else the balloon pops up. Third, I don't like having a status bar on the reply box for AT. Also I have one question, security center says it's not good to have 2 firewalls, I have norton internet security pro which has a firewall. Should I turn off the windows firewall or the norton? Thanks

Me too. I waiting a few weeks to see if MS will have an update in Sept. I have a router, firewall, antivirus, spybot, etc. so I'm not to worried about my PC turning into someone's bot.
