Quick question regarding the 2 versions of office (with or without business contact manager).

MICROSOFT 2007 Business Contact Manager for Outlook et. al.
http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net/msoffice/pub/X13-40150/X13-40150.exe

Does this file contain both office 97 AND contact manager OR contact manager only?

Asking because the version without contact manager (x12-30196.exe) weighs in at 388mb while the 2nd file (x13-40150.exe) is only 385mb.

Actually, MD5 is used on the file to make sure it is correct. It is a checksum.
You can get free MD5 utilities to check what you download, then you just match up the MD5, and if they both match, your good. If not, then you need to redownload again.

To make a CD out of X12-30196.exe file you'll need to run it to get extracted files. Run the file until you are prompted for the CD-key. At that point, click Start -> Run and type %temp%. Look for the folder named OWPxx.tmp (xx being a 2-digit number that's different every install). Open the folder and copy its contents to another folder, then cancel Setup. Burn to CD.

The X13-40150.exe file can be made into a fully-functional Business Contacts Manager CD by simply extracting the contents of the file into a separate folder on your harddrive via WinZip and burning the contents of the folder. Autorun.inf is included, so this is the full "file copy" (as opposed to ISO image) of the Office 2007 CD.

Just to answer my own question from above

x12-30196.exe (388mb) = Office 2007

X13-40150/X13-40150.exe (385 mb) = Microsoft office accounting 2007 + business contact manager for outlook 2007

Two CD's, Microsoft forgot to include the second one.

The second cd contains:

Business Contact Manager 2007
Accounting 2007
SQL Server 2005

As far as I've heard it's everything but Contact Manager in that one download.
It'll probably go and download any available updates and when you install it,
so if there are updates (I know there are for VISTA, I don't know about OFFICE),
you could possibly download them and put them on CD too. Otherwise just burn the
main installer file and a text file with a copy of your activation key for reference
and you're all set for future installs.

EDIT: Looks like some folks who've actually looked at what's in the installs
have given the definitive answer above.

So have we concluded that OEM copies arent so bad? I got "rid" of my free business edition and am ready to buy ultimate. The OEM seems quite tempting as its cheap, and if we can use it on different mobo's, even if its a phone call, I may just pick it up.

Of course the "retail upgrade disc" seems intriguing after reading the daily tech article about being able to use it for a full install if you install it twice.

Opinions?

Though I did find someone selling the Retail copy according to the SKU for only $230

Yea, Clean installs are the way to go, I too did an upgrade, had issues and did a clean install.
I too didn't care for Vista, but now that I've installed it and am running it, it seems rather nice. UAC is annoying as hell, but tolerable. And while I don't have any faults with it, I do have to say if you have XP and it does everything you want it to, don't worry about upgrading for the near future. To me it's more of a user friendly version of Windows.

You can turn off UAC. I did it and it made life much simpler. If you have multiple users at your household, you can leave UAC on for their accounts. I'm the only one using my current XP computer, which I've been able to keep fairly clean of spyware and viruses, so I don't think I personally need the annoying UAC.

Yeah, I know, Doesn't it nag you though? That's why I haven't done that yet. I hate that little red shield in the systray

Anyone know if you must fill out the W9 to get Vista?

Not sure, but I just checked the w-9 link ad saw this:
"To get started, please complete your W-9 online no later than February 1, 2007."

So get on it if you haven't, I don't know what the consequences are of not doing it in time but I just filled it out get in before the deadline.

I'm in Florida (south Palm Beach county); I received my copy of Vista last week. A work buddy also in sPBc received his copy of Office 2007 earlier this week.

How to make cd's out of them.

Rename them Office1.exe and Office2.exe

Click Start then Run and type:

X:\Office1.exe /extract

(X:\) is the path where you are keeping the file.

A dialog box pops up and ask where you want to extract to.

I don't want to pay the taxes for Office 07, so I didn't even fax in the W9. I'm content with just getting Vista. If I understood my email correctly, it said you would get ONE of the gifts without a W9, but not the other. I hope that's the case.

Finally got my Vista & Office today. Now what to do with it? I had installed a beta last year and removed it after a few days because of all the incompatibilities with my stuff...
