Free Windows Vista Business & Office Professional 2007 ?

The forms you have to fill out for the 1099s will be sent to you along with the first package (if you qualified for both Vista and Office). Then you send it in to MS. Once they receive it they will send the other package. I read somewhere on CNET that 30,000 packages were in the offer. Lots of people hesitated because of questions regarding the possibility that the offer wasn't legit. That probably bought a day or two of opportunity for the rest of us who managed to get in before the "sold out" sign appeared. I've been using Vista (RC1) for a while now and I like it a lot and would have bought a copy anyway. Same with office 2007 (Beta 2). The only strange thing I discovered relating to the offer was that my profile on the evaluation surveys all had the wrong state listed (AL) as well as a botched up phone number (it was split between the phone number part and the extension part). This was on all the forms. My profile everywhere else was good (including on the Working Together site). Anyway, I corrected it, just in case the software might be sent to the wrong state (seems unlikely, but one neveer knows). So it might be worth checking the profiles on the evaluation forms just to be sure.

i've received Office Small Business Edition, Virtual PC & Office 2003 from MS for similar promotions before, so i won't be surprised when they arrive. may try to upgrade the vista to the ultimate edition

Oops.. well...

Hey this is MICROSOFT VISTA we're talking about here... if they
say it'll ship in 2006, well, add a couple years and hope for the best!

And yes Mark Brown confirmed that it'll be a mailer containing a key and
download URL that'll be sent out for Office, so it'll be a download.
Then again IIRC Office wasn't "all that big" of a set of files from the
2003 versions I've seen.. I didn't download the Office 2007 beta though,
so maybe it's grown.. but still I wouldn't expect it to be more than 200 MBy or so.

And a 'funny story'... so I think to myself "Hmm I guess I'm going to get Vista,
great, let's read up on it and see what's the story about the 64 vs 32 bit
versions".

So I go to Microsoft.com and go to the page for the "VISTA PRODUCT GUIDE"
which is supposed to tell me all about VISTA's features, great.

Hmm... 45 megabyte download... and... oh... wait.. the only formats it's
available in are .XPS and .DOCX, neither of which can be read at all on
MAC, LINUX, or even any previous version of MS WINDOWS / MS OFFICE,
but it requires OFFICE 2007!

Hmm I guess they'll only tell you why to buy VISTA / OFFICE 2007 if you've
already installed them to open their sales literature to see why you should
buy them -- NO WONDER THEY'RE GIVING AWAY 30,000 FREE COPIES, IT'S
THE ONLY WAY THAT CUSTOMERS CAN FIND OUT ABOUT WHY TO UPGRADE!

Not true- there's a compatibility pack for Office 2k3 (possibly others too, but I haven't checked)

Here's the catch: you don't own Microsoft product, you license it. Therefore, if you don't have a dealer license, you cannot re-sell it (well, cannot legally resell it, to be exact).

Example: you rent an apartment and your landlord says you cannot sublease it. If that's in the contract--tough luck, you're stuck with your lease term. Same thing here: if M$ specifies you can't sell this sh!t in EULA--you cannot legally resell it.

Bottom line: read the fine print.

Companies can put whatever they want in EULA's it doesn't make them law.

I remember when the record companies didn't want stores buying and selling used cd's so they sued saying that the end user didn't own the music they were just licensed a copy of it so they were forbidden to sell their copy.

The courts disagreed and used cd stores still exist today even with the internet.

If you get a free copy of Vista or Office 2007 and sell it on eBay or somewhere like that I doubt Microsoft will know unless the person you sold it to registered it which most people don't.

Seriously it's agianst the law to speed but most people do.

Sorry ... go read up on "first sale" as it applies to software. Courts have repeatedly said that the license is sold and CAN be legally transferred to another. Just ask Adobe, Novell, Lotus and a few others that have lost such cases even when the EULA stated otherwise.
