So even if my t-mobile cell phone has wi-fi, normally i'd still have to pay to surf the web using my
own wireless network or someone elses? I thought it was like the psp where you can surf the web
as long as you have a connection available..

This free access promotion is for WiFi access at T-Mobile hotspots (i.e. Starbucks, Kinkos, Borders, etc.) How you get network access at your house or somewhere else is entirely up to you.

That means you can hack the EVDO network on a VCAST phone and connect wherever you want at broadband speeds. Not "too bad" IMO ;)

This was great for me last month when I was stuck in San Fran airport and my flight was delayed 3 hours.

Of course I got charged for the text message they sent me to get the free access code, but it was better than 3 bored hours in the airport.

Yup. EVDO network via Bluetooth connection on my laptop works great! 115.2 kbps instant connection(takes 3 seconds to connect) & i have mobile internet anywhere that gets a Digital signal(either EV or 1x Digital) free on nights & weekends on Verizon. I'm also on the $33.99 plan (15% Corp discount works in conjunction)

4. How long will it take to receive the text message with my pass code?
You should receive your text message in less than 2 minutes, in most cases within seconds. You will not be charged for the text message.

Thanks for post. Via WiFi NB or PDA, tho I don't understand the part about the cell phone. Wouldn't you need web access on the cell, and if you already had that, then you can already browse to some extent.

No... you need to have a T-Mobile phone/account so that you can enter in your T-Mobile phone number on the site, and have T-Mobile verify you're a T-Mobile subscriber and text the WiFi Hotspot passcode to you phone so that you can enter the passcode into the Login Manager on your laptop/PDA web browser.

You do not need web access on your phone, you need a WiFi capable device (laptop/PDA) for regular WiFi access through the hotspot.

You DO need a T-Mobile cell account.

SunnyD:

Thanks for your clarification. I have T-mobile, but do you go online before you travel to a hotspot with your laptop to get the access code? I've never used a legitimate hotspot, so my inquiry is as to method. Or do you go to a particular hotspot and get whatever they give to connect and then use that to go to the webpage to register for the access code?
hmm..
