We already have a few lists here in the Software forum that are quite heavily used, and very useful. But in the area of games we're somewhat lacking in web-based games. Sometimes, you just need to kill time on a computer away from home, and web-based games are the best way to do that without installing anything.
This list has been around for a little while, so I've got a fairly large list assembled. (As you can no doubt see) Still, I'm asking you folks to chip in with any good ones you find. Make sure to link to it and provide a little information about the game, particularly if it requires Flash, Java, can't work in Firefox, etc.
About 75% of the games with no "submitted by so-and-so" notes came from old OT posts by Czar, so give him plenty of props if you see him:
AddictingGames.com (Flash required) -- Plenty of addictive flash games, including the oddly satisfying Black Knight.
Albion's How Good a Manager Are You? (Flash required) -- More like a training seminar gimmick than anything else, but hey, it's a good way to kill time.
Beer Pong (Suggested by HomeBrewerDude) (Flash Director required) -- Unfortunately I haven't been able to play this yet, since I don't have Flash Director installed at the moment. There's both a single player and multiplayer version of the game, a definite plus.
Capoeira Fighter (Flash required) -- A flash-based fighting game, a la Street Fighter Alpha. Pretty neat.
Cube (Flash required) (suggested by DnaJ) -- A odd little puzzle game, instructions in Japanese or Chinese or something. Click on each cube and hold the button while you aim it, then release when the power meter is at the appropriate level to launch it into the goal area. Sometimes surprisingly difficult.
Deanimator (Flash required) (suggested by JoeKing) -- An amusing zombie shooter game based on H.P. Lovecraft's works, with a delightfully punny name. Nothing too gruesome... unless you get eaten.
Die Wagenschenke (Suggested by Phoenix15) (Flash required) -- Two games: Home Run and Hangover. There's something oddly amusing about trying to stop a man from vomiting by means of a submarine that pops gas bubbles in his stomach.
Differences (Flash required) -- Shows you two nearly identical pictures and has you click on the 5 differences in them. It's like the cover and back of Highlights in Flash form!
DNA Arcade (Java required) -- I think this is some kind of Finnish TV website. I can't tell because it's in another language. The bike game on here is pretty damn fun.
Epoch -- "Epoch is a turn based, text based multiplayer online strategy game. You start out in the copper age and work your way through the nano age. Research new technologies to gain an edge in combat. With over a hundred unique units and buildings, it has the greatest scope of any text based game. " I haven't played this yet, so I dunno if it's good or not.
Escape! (Java required) (Suggested by m0rg0th) -- drag the red block around in the white area without touching the blue blocks or the black border. Dead-simple graphics, but addictive nonetheless.
Escopeta (Flash required) -- A game of French origin. Shoot the naked men before they rape you... or something. Probably Not Safe For Work
Every Video Game (Java required) (suggested by habib89) -- Remember all those games you played as a kid? (Or maybe a teenager... I'm talking about the late 80s early 90s, mmkay?) Or all the ones you wanted to play? That NES game you could never get your hands on, or that bizzare arcade machine you played once at that pizza place that closed down. Well, EveryVideoGame.com probably has it. The name doesn't appear to be an exaggeration, at least for Gameboy, NES and Master System games. All of them are there, playable via Java applets. (not downloadable, hence the apparent legality) The site also has a decent arcade section. Definitely one of my favorites now. (NOTE: Several Genesys titles had Master System releases as well. Good examples would be Mortal Kombat 2 and 3)
Flash Arcade (Flash required) -- Clevermedia's flash game website. Featuring the ever-cliche'd Urinal Game!
Flashplayer.com's Games section (Flash required) (Kinda suggested by thecrecarc) -- A whole bunch of Flash games, "a whole bunch" meaning "I'm too lazy to count." Check out Interactive Buddy, the game thecrecarc suggested.
Fly the Copter (Flash required) -- hold the mouse button to make the helicopter go up, release to make it go down. Avoid the obstacles. As with most things, it's far more difficult than it sounds.
FOOTBALL (Flash required) -- A "kick the soccer ball" game. (Yes, I realize it's called Football everywhere but the US)
Frozen Den (Flash required) (suggested by theAnimal) -- Another very large collection of games. A lot of these are collected from other sites -- like the Stinko Man game from Homestar Runner -- but it's still a good collection. Check out the Sonic the Hedgehog game.
GameRival.com (Flash required) -- A huge collection of original Flash games. I've been playing the Gold Miner series lately. Very fun.
GAME scenta (Flash required) -- Another large collection of games, featuring an interesting one called Reverse, involving reversed mouse controls. Surprisingly difficult!
gprime.net's Flash Games (Flash required... again with the duh) (Suggested by randumb) -- 100+ addictive little flash games. I particularly enjoyed Super Mario Rampage, wherin Mario gets his hands on a 12-gauge and vents his frustrations. The music's performed by Mr. Bungle, if you care.
Gmax Skateboarding (Flash required) -- It's kind of like Flash-based Tony Hawk. Or something.
Grid Game (Flash required) (Suggested by t3hmuffinman) -- A deceptively simple-looking chain-reaction game. Unless you have a significantly large IQ, we're talking Stephen Hawking range, you probably won't be able to accurately predict what's going to happen based on where you click, but regardless it's pretty damn fun. See if you can beat my top score of 1929-- erm, 2014-- erm, 2273. (CAUTION: The rest of the site content as well as the advertisements are usually NSFW)
Gridlock (Flash Director required) -- A neat little 3d platform jumper, rendered a la gridlines. Very cool.
Homestar Runner (Games Section) (Flash required) -- The Brothers Chap can make a great flash cartoon, and also some pretty cool little games. They're a lot cooler if you watch the cartoons they were inspired by though.
Homokaasu GasGames Section (Flash required) -- A collection of interesting and somewhat unorthodox games, from the makers of The Kill Everyone Project. Most of these have some basic life concept involved, like gravity or laggy network connections. (The latter one is in a truly odd game)
Johnny Rocketfingers (Flash required) (suggested by Wadded Beef) -- An amusing stickfigure-animated point-and-click adventure, starring the hero of stickfigure heroes, Johnny Rocketfingers! Pretty cool, too, with a wicked soundtrack. (And now with 100% less annoying advertising click-through)
KillSomeTime.com's Addictive Flash Game Section (Flash required... duh) -- An accurately-named section on an even more accurately-named site. It features mostly new creations -- like Ball Revamped -- along with some new takes on old classics like Lemmings, Duck Hunt, and Mario.
The Kill Everyone Project (Flash required) -- Not so much a webgame as an interesting hands-on way to show how populated the world is. Click the button, kill a person. Repeat until the entire world's population has been eliminated. You can register and the site will track how many countless thousands you kill, or you can add to the rising death count anonymously. Currently there are roughly 2 trillion people left to murder, so you'd better get crackin'.
Kindom of Loathing (Suggested by screw3d) -- An online, turn-based RPG, chock full of satire and humor. I mean how often can you, a level 6 seal-clubber, fight valiantly against the stick-figure-rendered ninja snowman? KoL already has a massive, massive player base, so you won't be lacking for fellow players.
The Last Dalek (Flash required) -- A fun promotional webgame for the new Doctor Who series that's actually pretty damn fun, and not short either. Play as your favorite love-to-hate-'em Space Nazi, the Dalek! Exterminate all the scientists and acquire upgrades so you can escape from Henry Van Statten's underground base.
Nanaca Crash! (Flash required) -- Remember that time when you ran into your best friend on your bike, and she flew into the air, then bounced along the sidewalk and over people? And then the people would kick her, or slow her down, or stop her if she was lucky? And remember how you could magically teleport into mid-air and hit her with your bike again, to make her go faster? Man, those were good times....
Makai Media (Flash required) -- 30+ games to play, all of them maddening. Golf, Speartoss, Horse....
Memory (Flash required) (suggested by m0rg0th) -- True, not an exclusively original idea, but the animations and interface are very slick. Trust me, try it.
Rapid Motion (Flash required) -- A very unique pinball game on a round pinball table. X and M control the flippers, Space launches a new copper ball. The object is to get the silver balls into the pit. You'll get it when you see it. Highly addictive.
Reflections (A.K.A. "The Laser Game") (Flash required) -- Line up the mirrors so the laser shines into the bulb. Seems simple enough... at first. If you've ever played LaserLight or Aargon you know what to expect.
Reflex (Flash required) -- Apparently a very addictive puzzle game. Unfortunately the site is down at the time I post this, but it should come back.
The Reflex "Game" (Flash required) (suggested by jst0ney) -- Mostly a good way to test your reaction time. Wait for the color to change and hit the stop button as soon as it does.
SimGirl (Flash required) -- A Flash-based dating sim. Since this is about the closest most of us will get to a real date, you'll probably want to bookmark it.
The Simpsons: Zombie Shooter (hidden) (Flash required) -- Actually an easter egg on the official Simpsons website, the game is pretty easy and actually quite a bit repetitive. It's still amusing to take out Zombie Flanders though.
Slickball (Demo) (Flash Director required) (Suggested by jb) -- "roll a ball around platforms. Marble Madness-esque. (in german)". I was finally able to play this. It's a slick (pun intended) looking 3d rendered game that is very similar to Marble Madness. Arrow keys control the direction you roll in, Space stops you ASAMFP.
Slingshot Santa! (Flash required) -- Nothin' says Christmas like flinging Kris Kringle from a catapult(sp?). The music makes me want to go to Oktoberfest.
Snake Jump (Java required) (Suggested by jb) -- Jump along the suspended platforms and avoid falling. The platforms drop after you touch them, so don't hang around in one place.
Snowfight! (Flash required) -- Move the bully around with the arrow keys, then click on the goody two-shoes to fling a snowball at him. Very South Park-esque.
Teagames.com (Flash, Cookies required) -- A couple really addictive games here, particularly the Funky Truck and BMX series, which hold the same appeal as the DNA Arcade Trials game.
Tetka (Flash required) -- Not really a game, just an outstandingly well-done implimentation of 2d ragdoll physics with randomly generated orbs for the model to bounce off of. Oh yeah, did I mention that the model is a reasonably attractive woman in a bikini?
Throw Paper (Submitted by Rupster) (Flash required) -- We're all familiar with this game, since we've all done it at one time or another. Throw the wadded up piece of paper into the wastebasket, but mind the wind from the nearby fan. For some odd reason, this seriously reminds me of the Callahan's Crosstime Saloon adventure game.
Top Secret Kid's Interface Escape (Flash required) -- Adjust your angle and force on the grid to jump from platform to platform. It's hard to explain unless you see it, but it's pretty fun.
Yahoo! Games (Java, Windows and IE required) -- C'mon, who hasn't played Bejeweled? If only Yahoo! was more compatible with the non-Microsoft-brainwashed.
Virtual Apple (Apple 2 games) (May not work with Firefox) -- This is quite possibly the most complete collection of Apple 2 games out there, all fully playable in your browser. If you ever get a sudden urge to torture yourself with The Oregon Trail, now you can. You can also download the games for offline play.
Virtucube (Flash required) -- At this moment (4/20/05) an unsolved challenge from virtuquest.com. Each of the 6 faces of this cube contains a puzzle. Be the first to solve all the puzzles and win $500. (seriously) Several teams of people have been working on this for 6 months, and only 2 faces have been solved. Don't expect to get it in 5 minutes.
XGen Studios (Flash required) -- Currently XGen Studios has 5 games to its name, all of which seem pretty fun. If you're having trouble deciding, I suggest you go with Defend Your Castle. There's something satisfying about hurling stick figure attackers hundreds of feet in the air and watching them go splat.
ze's lil match puzzles (Flash required) (suggested by m0rg0th) -- Move X number of matches from their positions to form Y number of equal sized squares. Very, very, very maddening. I think something like this is on the IQ test.
Zookeeper (Flash required) -- Swap the animal faces on the grid so you get three in a row. The faces will disappear and new ones will fall in. (Yes, it's Bejeweled... kinda) Very easy to pick up; unfortunately you have to sit through what appears to be an advertisement for some Japanese brand of phone card first. (EDIT: now a demo for the Luxor game from Shockwave. Yes, one you have to pay for)
This list has been around for a little while, so I've got a fairly large list assembled. (As you can no doubt see) Still, I'm asking you folks to chip in with any good ones you find. Make sure to link to it and provide a little information about the game, particularly if it requires Flash, Java, can't work in Firefox, etc.
