Thanks! I've always been paranoid about our tap water, although it's probably safe to drink, and I cook, bathe, wash my hands in it I just think filtered water tastes cleaner.

Our local culligan distributer hung little "water test bottles" on our mailboxes one year, being curious, I filled the bottle with distilled water (I always keep some on hand for car batteries), and sent it back. They called me with a laundry list of impurities, then promptly apologized and hung up when I told them it was distilled water and was most definatly pure.

Did you distill the water yourself? Did you have the water run by another lab?

Maybe the "distilled" water wasn't so pure?



But a good idea regardless.

I'm not sure if this is the same sample, but about a month ago I received a kit in the mail where you test it yourself with chemical drops and strips. It was a real nice kit, and fortunately all the tests came out really good. The only one in the upper range was hardness, which is common in cities that use well water.

Bond: Nice experiment. You need a control group though. Maybe send one through a neighbor's bottle filled with urine, and see the difference? I have heard from a friend whose family is involved in water-filtration stuff that the "distilled water" you get @ the grocery store is iffy on whether its pure or not.

I hate to sound too jaded here but...

If you want to know what's in your water don't ask someone selling water filters. You can probably find an independent lab test kit at a local hardware store. Try to find one that tests the widest possible array of contaminants. You'd be amazed at the range of stuff that could be in there. From the obvious: lead, mercury to fertilizer runnoff to microbes. And noone will test everything. If you find you've got something nasty use google and try to find some independent evaluations of filters. Different ones work better with different kinds of pollutants.

Kinetico has a lab in-house that tests for many (but not all) contaminants.

They won't push their products either. It's just a test so you know what is in your water. From there it's up to you.

HERE are the results for my township (*,NJ)

Nitrate 0ppm, Nitrite 0 ppm

IRON TEST = 0ppm
PH= 7
Total CL = 0 ppm
FREE CL = 0 ppm
Hardness 3 grains/50 ppm

NOT BAD... I think my tap water is better than AquaFina
