free utility to compress mp4 video?

Hey everyone,

Post your recommendations for free software that can compress MP4 video. My phone records 1080p, 1 minute 33 seconds of video turns out to be 158MB! I downloaded a free program to convert the MP4 to AVI, but clearly that was the wrong thing as the file is practically the same size.

Help! Doesn't make sense to me for less than 2 minutes of 1080p to be 158MB. What are your favorite programs for this?

Very difficult to compress what is compressed. Strip out the video and save as audio. Phone records at 1080p? Insane!

Meh, 1080p isn't much more than a buzzword I say. 1080p on my phone, 1080p Netflix, 1080p YouTube, 1080p Bluray all look different 😛 The camera isn't half bad on the phone but it isn't anything amazing that's for sure (and I was used to 0.3 to 1.3mp phone cams before this).

Anyways... so there's nothing I can do? Seems insane to me that a minute and a half is 158MB, just insane. Srs wtf. 😛

Guess i'll re-record in 320x240 !

edit, seems to be about 7MB at taht resolution but looks like ass
640x480 is 24-25MB, doesn't look quite as terrible.

My head got twisted sideways. 😀

I also record with my phone at 1080p. I do not really care for the size as a I copy the files over to the computer as soon as I get the chance.

Thanks for the input guys.

LOL, oops

yeah I don't mind the copying to computer part, it's just sharing the file after. I'd be lucky to get a consistent 1 megabit upload, so it's tedious to upload that size.

Will definitely try handbrake
