Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe if you cancel, all your downloads become invalid, so it's really only a "warm" deal(since you get to try, but not keep anything).

I haven't looked at Rhapsody for a while, but I believe some songs allow you to purchase the rights to burn the CD a certain number of times, through the Rhapsody client.

Rhapsody is great. If you think really hard, you'll figure out a way to transfer the music to your hdd...

ViRGE you don't realy download anything, it's streamed. You are renting music essentialy.

You can burn *some* songs to CD. That will cost more.

---

The trend to turn content in something we rent versus own is not a good one IMO. Rember DIVX discs? I think this marginalizes the consumer and the artist all for the sake of "recurring revenue" for the corporation.

I also wonder how the artists are being compensated.

Good point; I must be getting it confused with PressPlay.

I think its no different then XM or Sirius. If you think about it, its like the same concept just for your computer...

The list of things I forgot to cancel is equal to the list of things I had to fight to get off of.

If there was only a way to
stream the music into your
box and record it like a
VCR. Oh well, too bad you can't.

But XM is SO much better. XM doesn't need to buffer, and is portable. XM has the XMPCR if you want a computer based XM, but the signal is still sat.

I can record only the music I want, transfer it to my iPod and play it anywhere...

Not to thread crap or anything, but why would you pay for what is essentially a streaming radio station that requires buffering? you can get that for free all over the net.

If it goes through your soundcard, you can record it to disk. There are lots of programs out that read directly from the soundcard and record everything to mp3. The only problem is with the quality of the stream. If it's a good stream the mp3 sounds pretty darn near cd quality. With that said...you can get a good chunk of newer music off of launch.com. They normally have a pretty good stream.

I've used Rhapsody before, its a roadrunner thing I think. Anyway, while its free its great, it isn't just radio stations, thats worthless. Its a huge database of music, old and new, that you can search and listen to VERY quickly and easily. For example I heard a song on the radio (a LONG time ago, ok), and couldn't find it, or even find out what it was in previous searches. Between Allmusic.com the guide thing, and Rhapsody, I tracked it down pretty quickly, Sneaker Pimps, Underground something remix, AND in a few seconds was listening to decent quality streaming audio of it. Just as easy and fast (fast is a BIG part of this) I listened to the whole song, and picked around some of the other songs on the CD, then checked similar artists, listened to some Portishead, basically spending a couple hours several times just hopping around genres and making notes about which CDs I really wanted to own. It was great and I would love to have another free trial, but wasn't ready for a monthly charge or the 99 cents a track to burn to CD.

Have you people actually used the service? It buffers for maybe 2 seconds and the quality is excellent. Songs always load quicker than it plays...

It's a nice service to use at work, saves me from having to copy a bunch of MP3s to this ancient machine I'm using. As long as they don't get pissed because of bandwidth... Just wish a couple things were different. Ability to download the songs w/o having to burn them to disk, cheaper songs, max price on CDs (like Rancid's cd, 20 songs, it's way cheaper to buy it in stores), discount on just the CD (non-custom/mix).

if you really want the music that you stream invest in a high quality mic and just set it near your speakers when you are streaming the music and record it that way, or just get a fm pci card (avermedia makes them) then when you hear a song you like just hit the record button

just ideas, not like i have ever done it or anything ;)
