Free subscription to Computer Shopper! (Digital format)

This used to be a great magazine, and was roughly the size of a phonebook. It was the place to get cheap equipment/PC prices, and good articles re how to build PCs, etc. Having the same info, but more current, widely available on the internet greatly reduced the appeal of this magazine. The last time I saw one it was a skinny little shadow of its former self.

Thanks for posting, though, I signed up to see how it is. No credit card info required, but they do require address, phone and job info.

It's alright..I prefer PCMag, though..I think I'm still getting the print version for free 😛

Eh, before the advent of the internet it was a good place to comparison shop for prices. Now? You can find pretty much all the content on the 'net.

<nostalgia> Before the net the new Computer Shopper issue arriving was always a big deal, to see all the new hardware and price drops you couldn't find out about anywhere else, plus the reviews that were more honest than PC Mag, and an early equivalent to Reselleratings </nostalgia>

Now it's pretty much pointless given the existence of resellerratings.com, pricewatch.com, and newegg.com.

Ahh,
Nostalgia takes me back to the days when seeing a dual Pentium 100 for $5999.95 was cause for a major case of drooling lust.

Yeah but this way you can keep up to date on Bill and Alice (?) from the Hard Edge! I always read that column first. Not that it was supremely awesome but rather the rest of the issue, after the ads, wasn't all that exciting. Those were good times. $200 mitsumi 4x cd-rom drives (proprietary). 14.4k ISA USR Sporster for just $150! Wahoo!

You guys like those dirt cheap drives ads, too? I always read them but never ordered from 'em.

I still have a stack of old PC Mag's from the early 90's in the garage. I threw away all the Comp Shoppers because they took up too much space. My how times have changed. 😀

omg, i remember when i moved and had to leave the wall of computer shoppers behind.

Does anyone besides me remember the cover of the issue around the time the 386's or 486's (i cant remember which) first came on the scene and they had that cover with the picture of the desktop pc with the custom paintjob of flames with the hooker headers and the supercharger on top?? hahaha, that was the best!! sure wish i had a picture of it to show the kids!!

eh, I have that free sub to PC Mag in digital format. Can't find the link to change it to print format tho 🙁

If someone has the link, please PM it to me!

I may be wrong but I think that's the issue where they overclocked a 386sx 16mhz all the way to 20Mhz. As far as nostalgia goes, this is the exact moment in time when overclocking as a hobby was invented.

Me too...digital format sucks, but since it was free I thought I'd try it out...I don't have time to sit here and electronically flip through PC Mag...takes forever...maybe if I was setup for wireless at home and could bring my laptop in the can with me 😉
