What's a ShrinkyDink?

Shrinky Dinks are these excellent thin plastic sheets that have patterns on them you cut out (like Smurfs or Superfriends, etc) and draw on in color pencil. You then put them in the oven (at 200 degrees?) for a few minutes and they shrink and get hard, so you can play with them.

In reality, I can't recall ever having fun with the completed project, but it doesn't get any better then watching them shrink in the oven.

Now on these being dated... How old were you when these were popular? I'm in my mid-twenties and still remember these, mom lied to me said they were not healthy toys (or something in the line of 'it will blow up the oven' type thing) just to keep me from getting these. What a sad thing to do to a kid. hehehe at least now I can go out and get em for myself, and live the childhood I never had, lite brites here I come!

Yeah...we made them once and they stunk to high heaven (they smell like melting plastic). But they were cool!

Man, I remember these things. You know what else was like these? Remember that toy that came with metal frames that you would fill with plastic "crystals" and put them in a little lightbulb oven? They would come out with the crystals melted, and you'd hang em in the window. Those were pretty cool too.

You can have all the free shrinky dinks you want by using certain disposable food container lids. One brand of cottage cheese has a clear lid frinstance.

AWhen I was a kid they didnt have patterns on them... ya hadda take yer magic markers and be creative and such.
