Free, secure file transfer software

I need to transfer some very sensitive files over the Internet to a friend... The files are small and either one of us can install whatever software is necessary.

What is the safest and easiest way to do this SECURELY and for FREE?

I have my roll your own that is based on the date of encryption along with a couple of other factors.

You can do a internet search for other tools that are out there.
